spring bear: sks or 12ga slugs

He said the .30-30 will move a 7.62X39 Bullet Weight or a 123gr bullet at 2600 not a 170gr. At least that is what I gathered from his post...

Mind you the blunt nose .30-30 will shed velocity a lot quicker than the 7.62 spitzer thus evening it out quite a bit at distance. Still I think this thread has been flogged enough. I think the OP has probably made a decision by now. Just my opinion though...

Guess you didn't read the first two sentences. He stated a 170 grain is faster than a 123g???????????????

7.62X39....123g@2350
30-30.......170g@2200

Where do you get your numbers from????????????

After load testing for both 7.62X39 and .30/30... I get 2400 fps with a 123 grain from the 7.62 and 2400 fps with a 170 grain from the .30/30... that is 1575 ft/lb for the 7.62 and 2175 ft/lb for the .30/30... 600 ft/lb difference between the two... the 7.62 carries 72% of the energy that the .30/30 does... when it comes to cartridges, that is a sizeable difference... and the difference becomes greater when I hot load 150 spire points for my single shot .30/30's... there are unlimited variables that will affect this relationship but this would generally hold true for an apples to apples comparison (as much as that is possible)... I'm not looking for a debate, this is just my experience.

Since we are talking 30-30 now....

I've chronoed a number of different factory 30-30 brands that would barely make 2000 fps with a 170gr bullet. Some were in the 1900fps range.

Now what? :)

Was that in a trapper? My log book shows 2140 for remington 170 trainers at -3C. Effing autocorrect.

My book also shows 8 different 7.62x39 loads, slowest is R-P UMC at 2376 average, fastest is some hungarian factory 21 dated 1979 at 2518.

And 1594 for winchester super x 1 ounce slugs.

I guess we all put our 94's in the EE and make a mad dash to the local CT or Mom & Pop for an SKS... ;)

Savage 99 and a Rem 788

Wow this got exciting. Pick up a couple boxes of slugs and see how your shotgun likes them. Go from there. If you do pick the SKS, get some decent quality hunting bullets to hopefully maximize performance. And a Handi Rifle is still cheaper than most cases of 7.62x39 surplus....just some food for thought.
