Spring bear?

Filled my tag 8:45pm Friday evening. Didn’t take any pictures, poor old sow was nothing to look at. Head big for body, tall, long, and very skinny. Muzzle and head were mostly grey, she moved slow and it looked like every step hurt. Reminded me of an old sad dog that needed to be put down. She went 10-15yards and expired quickly. She won’t starve to death in a den, and her meat will be entirely ground for burger. Aboriginal lady takes the head, hide, and paws for whatever she makes.

Yesterday I arrived home from my northern Alberta bear hunt. Did not see any boars however, plenty of cubs and 2 large sows. Arrived home with great memories. It was a hoot and I'll be returning next spring, this time in the second week of June.

Had a different sort of experience yesterday. I was baiting a barrel that hadn’t been used in a year. Got the grain and oil going and decided to burn and oil soaked paper sack in it to get some scent in the air fast. Watched that burn and had a smoke, then went back to get the ladder stand . I set it by the tree and never even got the pins in the ladder when I saw a huge black licking up the oil already at 25 yards. Big bugger wasn’t aggressive but he wasn’t afraid either. I set the stand up and sat in it and watched him for awhile then reasoning that if he hadn’t killed me yet he wasn’t going to.

P.S - that was a "spot & stalk" bear... I "spotted" him walking to the bait barrel, and I "stalked" from the back of the stand to the front, so I could draw my bow.

Awesome, good luck!

Only had one bear come to the bait this spring, unfortunately my work/life/hunting balance was off and didn't to the stand when he was hitting the bait. Almost looks like he had a collar one at some point.

Archery elk/mulie, then archery antelope.

:)Jogs the mind on a recent interest of mine. Got interested in archery years back and picked up a couple of bows from a friend that's 'in the business'. Still have a Hoyt Ultratec for target work and a Cybertec I've used on Island Deer. Shoulders 'bug' me too much these days, so:(, handling a decent hunting poundage with the Cybertec is nolonger possible. However, archery hunting is still an interest so I'm in the process of getting a new item of interest 'ready for the fray'. The world of crossbows.:d With that as an objective, I've picked up and am working with an Excalibur Mag 340. If the 'process' works out to a reliable level, I;) may try for an Island Deer this season. Wish me luck.

Got my other bear tag filled out. Not a big bear by any means but a good meat bear. 8x57 with 170gr Speer SP did the trick.
