Spring isnt far

Meanwhile on the west coast, this makes the rain squall that doubtless occurred 2 mins after the photo tolerable. Daffodils have been up for a couple weeks.

That is a depressing image, two months too early to think about green grass. Sonny and girl got back from Cuba last week and headed for Joshua Tree yesterday... if you can't live with the shovelling there are ways to escape it... at least for the young and the old, in the middle it is more complicated.

Envious! Didn’t go away the past couple winters, they seemed long. :d

First flowers usually come up in January, but there’s a caveat as you know better than any- damn can it rain! :d This said I still spend half my time 60 degrees north, and every time I come home from -20 and worse to liquid state water and green grass any month of winter I’m happy to see it. All that water falling gets to you after awhile, but you don’t have to shovel it. But it sure would be nice to see the sun more from Nov-Feb.

-22C here overnight here the last 2 nights LOL
the geese around here must be freezing their beaks off LOL
Saw some Swans in the open water of bridge creek at the outflow end of Horse lake yesterday. That was a cool sight but not a good place to stop and take pictures.
I'm perfectly fine with it being -20's right now..... extends my ice fishing season by at least a few more weeks.

I love winter ;)

LOL. Yes I was speaking to a BC seed company today who told me they shipped my 2020 order of 22 pounds of shallots . She said time to get them in it is getting late
I didnot have the heart to tell her how do I get through the 4 feet of snow and frozen ground. They will be stored for at least 6 more weeks here :(

On the brighter side, I tapped a Maple yesterday, and the sap was flowing before I could get the spile in. South of here it's been running for a while, but this was the first here.

That makes me envious as I haven't been in any eastern maple bush for 20 years now. Real jealous! Hope your year is good.

-20s the remainder of this week at night. Thigh high snow in the bush. Going to Mexico soon and then hit the mountains for some spring sledding and then into gopher shooting.

heading out tomorrow its going to +15 ,have the 22,22wm,204 Ruger and the 22-50 .Last time I was out there was so many sod poodles dead on the hiway it felt and sounded like rumble strips lol, should be a good day
Ya Ardent you guess are quit a bit ahead of us here, I some long green grass on some of the SW sheltered areas , but you guys don't really no what winter is lol

Very cool bbobie, please post some pics of those sod poodles!.....:)

The first ones come out in Cranbrook around April 15-20 or so, depending on the weather. We had 6" of fresh snow near Skookumchuck, but it is mostly melted already.

We sure miss the yellow bellied marmots we use to shoot on private ranches in the Okanagan. Since we moved to the Cranbrook area we haven't seen any here. Apparently we have the odd Hoary Marmot here but definitely not enough to harvest them, we have never seen one yet in 4 years.

Columbian ground squirrels ( east kootney gophers ) are plentiful but we compete with our badgers which are protected here in BC. Man do we see a lot of badgers. Only the do-gooders will tell you they are endangered.

Either way we are jealous yours are up already, we heard the same news last year, I can't believe they come up so early there.

Your gophers are Richardson Ground Squirrels which are twice the size of our Columbian Ground Squirrel cousin. I guess that makes them a easier target to hit, lol.

Thank you for the update!.....:) We all look forward to the pics!

Well, yesterday we spotted a Red Winged Blackbird, and then a Robin.
I hope that poor Robin can find some bugs. There was still 2' of snow at that point.
It poured rain here all morning, so the snow is taking a hit, and the pond is filling.

I have robins here also in the snow banks :(
We have been putting out some apples slices and old blueberries out of the freezer and they have been hitting them hard
Cheers

looks like all the geese and ducks around here that started arriving 2 weeks ago have turned tail and flew back south again LOL Probably back down to the fields in Kamloops and Ashcroft area.
Hit -32 at my place on Wednesday night and froze the battery in my truck. Been in the mid minus 20's overnight and high winds and sub zero day time. Of course I didn't even think to plug in the vehicles and battery tenders ….. it's mid march
i'm on the outskirts of 100 mile house in the bc interior fwiw.

well after the big storm this past few days the sun came out it was -21 this morning and has warmed up to -12 with a 5 km wind from the west
the storm left plenty of snow ,lots of the side roads and road allowances and canal service roads are drifted over pretty good if you don t have a 4 wheel dr truck you wont get far with out getting stuck
I took the 204 ruger out with 60 rounds of the Hornady 32 v-max and 40 of 32 Nosler ballistic tips up to the ridge to find some sod poodles
I wasn't disappointed even thou I have had a lot better shooting (faster) I managed to come back with all the rounds fired.
you would travel down the road there would be half a dozen here half a dozen there just sitting on a blanket of hard packed snow
So I would pull over pull over pull out the tarp lay it down out came the rear bag rifle next ,I didn't miss many but I missed enough , Im still getting used to how flat the 204 shoots withthose little pills
not sure which one performed the best, there was pcs flying in the air in every direction, I m sure some of them flew 30"high
Im tumbling brass as I write this and there will be some bergers and noslers showing up at the post office early this week ,ill be loading them up and heading out again next weekend
I have a spring turkey tag this yr ,so ill get some good sod poodle shoots in come may 1 I will be out trying to get a Tom
Any ways they are out in shoot able numbers now
Good luck Guys
