Spring Turkey

my turkey season has been completely facked. had surgery on my right foot on may 30th and have been having a hard time just walking around the house with a big bulky dressing and three pins, can't drive and to top it off every afternoon when I take the kids off the bus there's a bunch of hens with a few tom's and jakes across the road.......... every afternoon............ this morning I look out my bedroom window and there's a big tom with a half dozen hens right behind our house in one of our field and I'm just having a hard time walking on uneven surfaces that I can't make it to the barn to even get close enough for a shot.......... good luck everyone. oh and I have a new custom slate call that I really wanted to use, sounds great........... in my house!

fack!

I feel your pain. Last season I had hernia surgery May 1 and only got out twice. Once with a buddy who carried all the gear and he got to shoot his first turkey and the last day of the season. Against medical and much against spousal advice I walked the half mile(very slowly mind) to the bush. Where I wanted to be was flooded so I sat down where I could and the turkey gods took pity on me. By 5:45 I had a 20lber roosted at 25 yds, fly down, come to the decoys, and down he goes. Worst part was had to call another buddy to carry the bugger out. Hey what are friends for.
Some of my best hunting comes in the last week of the season and I have more than a few big birds that would not even turn my way earlier in the season come on a dead run those last few days. Never give up!!!!

watched the tom strut around two hens for the last hour, no gobbling at all. I'm calling my father-in-law tonight and see if he can come with me in the morning and drop me off at the field edge on one of the quads.......... we'll see if he wants to come out for a few hours.......... my wife won't want me to go but she won't argue that early in the morning, she'll just put a pillow over her head and won't realize what I'm going to do............

Left for Kingston this afternoon and arrived at our camp site for turkey hunting tomorrow. Holy Frig!!! Black Flies!!!! I completely forgot and we weren't equipped for the mass swarming. It was too much...

Now I'm back home and two weekends left... not sure I'll punch my second tag this year and my trail cam showed signs of promise.

so I've had a few tom's in the fields behind the house and in the east fields often throughout the days at different times the last week........ had my wife help me put out my double bull a few days ago and have gone out on the quad a few times and hobble to the blind and always have hens come into the decoys and decided to go out at 3:00 this afternoon and had two hens come into the field and followed by a tom and got him to leave them after about twenty minutes of aggressive calling and shot him at 12 yards at 4:00.
pics up later tonight

I had to get my mother to come over and take a picture, I guess I should have told her to make sure the whole bird was in frame.................
here's my bird for the year and don't think i'll be out for another with my foot problems.

Don't blame Mum, she got the important frame, her son... Nice looking bird, impressive and perfectly symmetrical fan! Best of luck with your foot, hope it holds out so you can get another bird for this year.

I guess your right.......... but one and only bird for me this year, not my biggest but proud of him only have been able to go out with someone driving me to my blind and sitting in a folding camp chair with foot rest. only spent a few hours in the woods this spring but made it count.
thanks

Nice job man!!! Congrats on getting out there and getting one with your injury. I had sort of the same issue.... Couldn't wait for turkey season to come around, then April 24th while chopping veggies with a far to big and heavy knife for the job at hand, slipped outta my hand and landed in my foot. Cut my tendon in half. Had surgery on the 25th. Have been wearing a big ol' air cast ever since. About the third week of the season I started getting out with the cast in three grocery bags and a hockey sock duck taped over top :) Hurt a wee bit dragging that foot around but god I love hearing those gobbles in the morning.

Cheers

I hear ya about walking in pain, I have a bulky drsg with two pins still in (had one removed on Tuesday) and the only thing I could find to wear so I wouldn't get the drsg wet was the arctic shield boot cover I have on my right foot you can see in the picture. the farmer that rents our field came last evening a couple of hours after I shot my bird and disked all the fields and it's too uneven for me to walk on so I'm done for sure now. got him just in time I guess......
good luck and get out there

Finally go my bird yesterday morning. It was not ther biggest Tom my Sons and I saw on the farm but with only a few days left in the hunt I took him. Weighed out at 17 Lbs 12 oz.

Now that's a Jellyhead!!! Congrats!!!

I'm leaving in the am to spend the last few days of the season on Pelee Island..... Hopefully I'll get my second bird and tag out!!! Then maybe take the ATV on the wine tour :)

Well tomorrow is the last day of the season! I'm going to get out there and give it my best! I haven't got a bird yet but still consider it a very successful season - my young nephew got his first bird and my brother got his biggest in 9 years of turkey hunting.

No bird this year, lots of gobbles in the area but I'm still new at this and need to improve my calling bit it will come! My gfs brother got one and it was was his first year turkey huntkng so I was glad he was able to get one! But it was a fun season none the less
