Specifically, the military manual TM 9-1005-205-12. The manual is dated December of 1970 and there is another manual about the 1903A4 the following year, TM 9-1005-205-34. What I don't understand though is these rifles were long out of service by 1970... so why did the US Military put out two new manuals for them?

I’m thinking that it was probably for the JROTC, their version of Cadets. I’m pretty sure they were still using them at that point and instructors would have had to been knowledgeable with them. I know that we put out a manual on the number 4 as late as 2000 or 2001 as the rangers were still using them and I’m pretty sure that some cadet CTCs were as well(or the No 7). The update probably incorporated newer range safety protocols or tried to mirror their regular PAM. Correct me if I’m wrong. Could it be a drill manual otherwise?

I think some National Guard unit may still have had M1903A4's in their arms rooms in the early 1970's.
