This recently came into my possession.

Does anyone have any details and rough idea of value? I tried searching but nothing came up. Springfield 87M .22.

This question is maybe better in the Rimfire forum. But you've indeed got something very uncommon. Check rimfirecentral.com for more info under the Savage/Stevens forum. Take that rifle outside for some better pictures, it looks like the wood could be quite nice.

What's odd is that the rear sight arrangement seems to have been moved back to the top of the receiver. And most often replaced with a scope and now missing.

No, I mean there should be an open ramp rear sight mounted to the top of the receiver (normally mounted on the barrel). The Mossberg scope/mount wouldn't have been original.

Yes, the sights in post #4 look like one of several different versions of rear sights I saw as well.

Looking at my 87D the rear sight dovetail is about 3" forward of where the barrel meets the receiver - or in other words, it would be underneath the upper handguard on the OPs rifle??

Never seen one with the full handguard like this, cool find OP.

I have one.
They were made shortly after WW2 and went by a couple different names for different store buyers.
The original rearsight is a battle peep type .
Under the handguard , there should be the groove cut. out for the rearsight that's found on all Stevens 87 series rifles.
It will likely be stamped Steven's 87A under the handguard as well.

Where/how is the rear peep installed?
