Springfield and Winchester Serial # Background ???

I have a 45-70 Springfield Carbine and want to know it's worth to put it on the market. I spoke to a Springfield dealer in the States who offered to send me a check for the gun, and once they had proofed it send me the difference. Like I'd ever hear from them again.
Same deal with a 44-40, 1873 Winnie in octagonal I have. What I want to know is whether there is a reputable source available to determine the worth of the guns in advance according to their serial numbers. I have little or no time and inclination to sift throught the net and can't get to the factory records for the original disposition of these firearms.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Gaurenteed you will not get the full value in that deal...though it may be difficult her in Canada as well.
I collected Springfield Armory firearms for nearly 20 years and have appraised trapdoors on numerous occasions...I am not collecting them anymore so I have no bested interest in making money on a deal...I can give you an honest opinion that is not based on the propsect of personal porfit.

I think for both guns, condition is far more important than date, except for the unlikely event that they are associated with a specific conflict. You are better looking at John Denner's site or Ellwood Epps to see what others are selling for, in similar condition
