Hello,

So I am planning on getting back into shooting sports and am looking for a 1911 to start shooting and practicing with...

My choice so far is a Springfield Armory 1911 RO Elite, just not sure which caliber to go with ? 9mm or .45 ACP ( I am not into re loading ammo as of yet )
or

Springfield Armory 1911 in 10mm

I do plan on getting into one of the disciplines in either IPSC, IDPA or another one I chose to.

Looking for some recommendations from guys who shoot these different calibers and what there thoughts were on the matter.

Also if someone has any other compelling reason to switch to say SIG or Ruger even COLT I would be glad to read your comments and explanations.

Cheers

Seann

If you don't reload go for the 9. You'll go broke shooting .45 & 10mm in volume. The RO in 9 is not your best choice for either IPSC or IDPA being an SAO single stack design. Look closely at what others are using.

If it's all just for fun with no intention of being competitive, get whatever makes you happiest. My recommendation; buy a Shadow or Glock and use the savings on reloading set-up. Learn to load and by the time you're ready to change guns not loading won't be a consideration.

For 9mm look at the colt competition over the ro that's the route I took I was never really impressed with the Springfield ro the trp is another story.

The Springfield Armory RO Elite Target in 9mm is a great choice for IPSC Classic Divison or IDPA ESP.

9mm is a great Caliber for plinking or competition. .45 is just too expensive a proposition unless you reload - and even then it’s significantly more expensive than 9mm.

And, as skoal says, be sure to check out the Colt Competition (also in 9mm).

Fair enough; my assumption was entering the sport through Production or SSP respectively. I'm also fairly certain in IPSC Classic he would be scored Minor shooting 9mm.

Initially thought it may be too big for IDPA ESP. Looks like it's in by 0.1 inches if the spec sheet is right.

To each their own but I have the opposite opinion, even the basic RO is a better built firearm.

Had ordered the Springfield was told they would come in in a year so i went with the Colt Competition 45 ACP. Excellent gun. Tight tolerances. Get A stainless steel version.

How is reliability of your Colt ? On every match I see how 1911 jam badly, people smashing lower trying to clear ... Is it 9 mm problem ?

As personal experience, with 40k rounds (ipsc) through my loaded target in less than two years. I trust springfield so much i bought an RO as a backup.

Loaded target locks tight with heavy abuse and little love.
Regular parts and maintenance and a steady diet of titegroup and campro.
You may need to enlarge the chamber mouth with some 1500sandpaper to make it reliable with range pickup or swelled brass.
That was the only downside i found. Chamber isn't tight, but it's not dirty brass friendly or 100% reliable under any circumstance unless you only shoot/reload new brass or plunge test each.
Noticing your in angus, are you a barrie range member?

In my view a 1911 should be in .45 so if you don't reload then it will be Expensive. But for IPSC I would reload and use a .45

If I were to go with 9mm I would go for a CZ 75 or a Glock.

I have found my two Springfields super reliable with the Champion being used and the Trophy Match, my backup 1911A1 has been test fired only and admired, not even dis-assembled so plan to list it for sale.

Yes I am in Angus, not a member anywhere yet but would like to join the Barrie club as it is very close to me...

Thanks for the tips and recomendations

Springfield RO or Colt Competition

I have both and feel them equivalent. I tend to prefer the sights on the Springfield, but the adjustable novak on the Colt is quite serviceable

My RO is 9mm and the Colt is 38 Super, so they are two different variety of apples.

If I was to buy another I would go Colt, because "Colt".

If you go for the Colt, get the new Series 70 version. Mine isn't, so I spent a few extra $ for a spacer and tossed that idiot firing pin block out

Don't overlook the CZ Shadow2. It's just superb! C$1245.00. The excellent CZ Shadow SP01 is now just over C$800.00!

Glock's model 34 is also a great choice. Stick with 9mm. It's the most popular cartridge by far.....

Last I looked none of those were 1911's. Good guns all, but not what the OP wants.
