Springfield Armory M1A/M14

Hey all, I have been looking far and wide for an M14 or M1A rifle - unmodified for some time now. I am having no luck!

I was wondering if this was even legal in Canada at this point - obviously I know the laws are getting stricter all the time - but that's another topic.

In any case does anyone know of a store in BC that sells M1A/M14's and NOT a Norinco copy. An actual Springfield one. If it's legal is it restricted? I've always been a fan of the gun, and would love to pick one up at some point in my future, but for the life of me I can't find one that isn't a Norinco.

Yes the are legal. Many people own them. Non-restricted if the barrel is more than 16" long. There ARE restricted variants such as the SOCOM 16. Springfields are harder to find than norinco's. I've heard many times that springfield doesn't really try to sell their products to Canadians.
 
Shyane @ Reliable can get them in for you. Just simply stop by there and order it from his catalogue.
But you do know that the Springfield Armory is not the same company as the S.A. who originally made this rifle.
 
Springfield M1A, is a copy. Norinco, is a copy. Both are non- restricted (except the socom).
A real M14 (SA, TRW, Winchester, HR) is prohib.
Older Springfield Inc rifle with all usgi parts, can be worth the money if in good shape.
Newer Springfield Inc rifle with SAI parts, definitely not worth the money asked for it.
All Springfield Inc receivers are cast.
Norinco/Polytech receivers are forged.

Hope that clears up a few things.
 
At the end of the day, for less money than an SAI rifle with new made cast parts, you can build a USGI clone with all GI parts except for a Chinese receiver.

What you want to do it totally up to you.
 
Trust me, I own a SA M1A, I had way to much money in the bank after a long winter of work and bought it totaly on impuse, save your money.

If you buy a Norinco your #### will not fall off - (bow to Hungary)
 
FN sports is the importer for SAI. If you contact them, they can tell you which dealer got the exact model you're looking for.

There's actually a beautiful Standard M1A in the EE, posted by Murdoc.
 
Hey thanks for all the information, sorry it took so long for me to reply! This all does clear some things up for me. I can't buy one right away cause I'm still in university - so money is a bit tight - but I'm just trying to get the research done for a few months form now when I'm working full time again.

Has anyone bought the M305 and replaced all the parts away from the Chinese ones? I heard the M305's have some pretty awful finishes and the internal parts use a mixture of different measurements so its hard to accurately put back together?

You will notice that pretty much 95% of M-14s in Canada are Norinco's. And quite a few people have done the USGI swap, with great results. And Norinco firearms are not as bad as people think, I had a Norc 1911 and it worked fine, and was finished fine. Their M-14's are probably their best item, I would go further but Im still waiting for mine to be loaded on, travel on, and come off the boat lol.

Dunno about the 'awful' finishes, but I would rather describe them as goofy "shop class" finishes. Hey, a beadblast and park tank trip will resolve all these minor irritations, but frankly my last 2009 Poly was beautiful, even the 2009 Norcs are nice looking! Different measurements? All depends who you yak with! I'm happy with my Norc.... :D

Yes, I've done this about 3 times now.... stripped all the zhinese parts off and replaced them with Douglas barrels, USGI parts all over...

All of them shot into 3/4" all day long. Life is good. Then like a fzcking idiot :puke: I sold them all one at a time for other projects. :eek:

Would I do it again? Nah... I bought all the USGI parts for a great price between 2001 and March 2003 when the 'Mericans moved into Iraq (OIF), then all the M14 parts prices drove straight up, up, up! :cool:

Now my Douglas barreled Norc M14 2007 still sports a Poly trigger group, Norc op rod, Poly handguard. The rest is USGI because I ran out of money! :D

Is it worth the effort ? Only you can determine what it takes to keep yer #### on your body! heh heh heh :confused:

I am also looking to add an M14/M1a to my inventory. I am new to this site but have gone over many of the pages trying to research what will fit my needs. I have come accross lots of technical info that is a bit above my level of understanding. Can anybody dumb down the benifits (other than the forged receiver and price) of the Norinco rifles over the Springfeild armoury ones. I know this has all been discussed before and i am sorry for asking the same questions again ... not as smart as the averge poster i guess. Is there another place i can research that may answer my questions?

Am I better off buy a cheaper rifle for the reciever and sending out to be accurized. I want a rifle that is quite accurate out to at least 300+ yards. (That is about as far as i am good for for now ... with more practice and a decent rifle i hope to get better.)

I dont plan on competeing but I do plan to hunt with it. I know there are more accurate rifles out there but i like the look and nostalgia behind an M14. In short if money or buget was not my main concern but having a great rifle is what is my best bet. A modified Norinco or something like and M21 from the Springfeild Armouries. Thanks for your patience.

Definition of a Restricted Firearm
According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:

a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
a semi-automatic, centre-fire rifle or shotgun with a barrel length less than 470 mm (18.5 inches) that is not prohibited;
a rifle or shotgun that can fire when its overall length is reduced by folding, telescoping or some other means to less than 660 mm (26 inches);
any firearm prescribed as restricted (including some long guns).
