Hi all,
I am coming into some loose change and want a 7.62 nato rifle for my humble collection.

I know many of you fine folks that know much more than I about .308 rifles endorse Norc. m14 but... I will not and can not go that route (personal reasons).

The SOCOM 16 is what I want but due to the 2.5 'evil, kitten killing' inches missing I cannot have her unrestricted.

My question is: Is there a Springfield rifle avalible in 18.5 inches? I know there is the 18 inch factory version but the same legal pit falls apply.

I require the shortest version I can legally take out in the 'bush' and would very much appreciate any guidence as I really don't know to much about mods (ie. brl cutting/replacment etc).

Thanks in advance and please don't try to 'sway' me on the benefits of a milled vs. forged reciever stuff as I just don't want any Norc products. in my humble collection regardless of the cost.

That being said I am not 'trash talking' them.

I have shot the stock Norc m14 and a 'tricked/buffed' (National match style in think  )version and THEY BOTH WERE IMPRESSIVE! I have also seen and shot many Norc. HGs that were tricked out and was equally impressed by them. The 1911 9mm being most impressive , but alot of work was done to her.

Norc. makes affordable templates that can be made into great guns for a steal of a deal .

I want a shorty American made semi-auto .308 rifle end of story.

Enjoy the weekend CGN!:dancingbanana:

The Springfield Scout is 18" like you said, what some have done is have the M305 (Norc) cut down to 18.5", basically making into a scout, not wanting the Norc still only leaves you with the option of cutting down an M1A (ouch). Maybe other options exists with a different rifle, but as far as M14/M1A goes my 0.02 is that it's a chop chop job.

Added: Fulton Armory sells an 18.5" barrel option

Springfield doesn't make a 18.5'' rifle.

You could always have a 22'' cut and re crowned and rethreaded for the flash hider. I don't think it is just as easy as that though. I believe if you cut down the 22'' barrel the gas system will have to be modified to function properly.

I think P&D would be a good place to call as they carry the springfield line and they have modified norcs to 18.5" in the past.

I had one of my 22inch springfields professionally cut down to 18.55 inches and went with the Smith Vortex and Gas Lock Front Sight. Gas system required slightly enlarging the port in the barrel for proper cycling. She now shoots great.

Good luck,

No mod to gas system, works fine with shorter barrel, it cost around 60$ to cut, crown & tread then add $$ for the flash hider.

He does some work also, see his custom page, haven't had anything done by him yet but I picked this up on the board.
