Springfield SOCOM II

the restricted status is indeed no fun, but i'd rather have it than not. at 300 with irons i will be stretching it, i imagine a good optic could indeed bring out more from it. but for the longer range stuff i'll just borrow wifey's :)

UGH!! Restricted status does indeed suck! It would have been great to take it deer hunting last year. The 16" barrel will work well in the Quebec bush where 35 yards is the average kill range for deer. That 22" and the flash hider kept getting snagged on brush and filled with snow. I ended wrapping up my whole front end with a leather bag.

Can someone explain to a simpleton like myself how a shorter barrel leads to less velocity? Logic and reason would say, less time in the barrel = less drag on the bullet as it scores it's way through therefore greater velocity. Yet I know it is nots so, just don't know why.

The bullet is accelerated down the barrel by the pressure produced by the burning powder. A shorter barrel = less time for the pressure to do its work, which = less velocity. Frictional losses are irrelevant, because the pressure continues to overcome them for the entire barrel length with no problems.

i can't think of a better sbr to have in restricted status (maybe a leonidas from socom supply :p ) one day they may be gone just like a 4" revolver without 12.6.

socom is a boom stick, be prepared to upset the local fudds lol.

even though i am one of those guys that would rather dress up a norc receiver with high end parts over spending too much money on the same rifle from springfield......
I have ordered a SOCOM 16 springfield through a friend. I would like a restricted M1A and already have various configs based on g.i parts and norc receivers. Always swore i would not buy a springer.... guess i'm eatin crow :D

^^^ Nah - just nice to have both variants.

I loved my Socom-16...

...but really needed to decide ownership priorities and got a BNIB M4 Super 90 in trade. It was an expensive gun-year.

Not as crazy about the Socom-II's balance, but each to their own. I prefer VLTOR stock mount with simple M1913 front rails to the heavier VLTOR rail.

I think you said it before that some people feel the need to replace parts on the M1A/Norcs/M14s. The fact is that there are very very few people that would ever notice a difference between a cast and forged receiver. The M1A is good to go. I have thousand of rounds through mine with no issues. I think some people just need something to tinker with or worry about! Just get the rifle and hit the range. If some posters want to change out parts. I have some hugely overpriced M14 USGI stuff if you want it!!!

morpheus, you seem to be a guy with a check on what is happening with the socom's coming from springfield and there workings.

who has a socomII with extended rail in canada they want to part with? lol

Hate to be the bearer of bad news cuda40. If you are ordering now, you should expect a 12-16 month wait. They seem to be a rarity these days.

If the scout model is non-restricted, are there aftermarket stocks that are similar to the SOCOM II?

I did a Google search and found the Fulton one, but I really like the stock design on the SOCOM II, which ain't the same.

That's a Vltor stock and is almost impossible to find in Canada (no longer allow to export from the States) and I think there is one dealer (one of the sponsor on this site) has one can't remember who though.

Hm. Interesting, that. For me, t's pretty theoretical for the mo, as I don't have an RPAL yet (doing the course later this month), but if I'm looking for a thunderstick to use when the zombies attack, something like this might fit the bill ;)

Hate to tell ya but the Springfield Scout is restricted as well, and yes, its just as frustrating. When guys on here use the term Scout (implying non-restricted) they are referring to a shortened Norc just beyond the restricted length.

Oh, I thought they were referring to the scout model on the Springfield site. I guess I should have paid more attention to the stats on the gun, eh?

Now I feel like a total noob...
