Yes it can. Back in 2006. XD9 was my Production pistol. If you really feel comfortable with XD then get yourself set up with all best holsters and pouches, however most of the shooters who got into IPSC with XD after some time changed to CZ or Tangfoglio.

I started with an XD40. Now I shoot a Shadow in 9mm for production. The XD is just too light especially in .40
