Hi everyone, question
i just purchased a new xd40 in black,it is a beautiful firearm and it came with a holster, mag pouch and loader.
my question is will that holster and mag pouch suffice for shooting ipsc.
does it meet the requirements and is it just any good or should i look for something better?? i do not have my black badge as of yet but i thought i would start doing research.
Thanks
George

Yes, it'll do at a pinch, but I think you'll find that the Fobus holster is not very good. It'll tear up the finish on your XD for a start. ;) If you're keeping down the costs of starting IPSC, look for an Uncle Mike's Kydex holster, along with a few more mag pouches. You'll need at least 5 mags to shoot IPSC, but what you have now should be good for your BB course.
If you can afford it, a BladeTech DOH holster is great for Production Div.

How exactly does one plastic holster tear up finish more or less than another? Keep them clean and they all work the same.

I tried a Fobus holster with my G35 a few years ago, and the inside of the holster started to deteriorate very quickly, with the plastic "rolling" up in to ridges. A Glock is a tough gun to damage, but the Fobus started doing a number on the slide very quickly. I have a photo here somewhere that I took of the inside of the Fobus holster....I'll post it in a few minutes to show you what I mean. Maybe Fobus has fixed this problem, but it put me off them. The holster also started damaging the left side of the accessory rail.

Here ya go. Sorry, I can't locate the picture of the damage that it started causing to the G35's slide and the gun's long gone...Edited (again) to add: This was after just TWO matches, btw.

I can only speak for my experiance, but I've been shooting with my xd in a fobus holster for over a year now and it hasn't marked the finish in any way.

The fobus I had for my 1911's did wear the blue, but frankly, the springfield armories blue can be worn off by looking at it so I don't take this as a major problem. All kydex/thermoplastic holster cause some wear, thats the trade off for durability over leather...

I got a Uncle Mikes Kydex holster with my two tone Sig P226 and everytime I use it, the slide gets more scratched up. I will never use a kydex holster again.

Hello Underdog, The Brunnial finish on the XD was the weak link. My XD suffered extreme holster wear for a G-Code kydex Holster. My Glock 17 shows no wear at all.

With the amount of holster draws you do in IPSC practicing just about any holster will cause some amount of wear marks over time. I just re parkerized after a few years and it is good to go.

I am now partial to the BlackHawk Serpa CQB kydex holster and mag pouches. Most of it is personal preference.

The fobus is.... not ideal. I had an XD in a fobus for a little while, and it easily chewed $100 off the resale value in that short time.

Has the XD finish changed? If not, Constable Constable has a one in a million experience.

Unfortunately, every holster wears guns, even race holsters. The trigger guard on my IPSC Glock is beat to ####. Slide is still purdy, but the trigger guard is beat.

Holster wear is just one of those things. Whatcha gonna do?

Dragon blade: I forgot about the sig. ####, holmes, you got nice guns!

I won't get a Fobus again. It left some holster wear on my USP with minimal usage. Plus the Fobus is not adjustable.
The inside of the Bladetech is smoother finished, and adjustable.

I use the XD gear holster for IPSC with no problem. One piece of advice.

1) unscrew the locking tension screw all the way out.
2) put oil on the inside of the holster, it makes the draw a lot easier and quicker.

leather for ipsc

Has anyone looked into or are familiar with leather holster for ipsc? Possibly Galco, High Noon or Safariland? If so let me know.

I have an Uncle Mikes with an XD40, very good retention, but still fast.

The wear on the pistol is minimal, but it i visible. I read on the US XD forums a lot are opting for a gun kote type treatment to their slides.

My point is that if you allow grit to build up in any holster you will see wear. With plastic holsters (especially in a dusty environment) , you need to consider some type of anti static treatment. All holsters cause wear, all plastic holsters are pretty much the same, although they may have different contact points.

A well used pistol with honest wear from use in competition is a weapon with character. I agree with maurice in that the Fobus rigs I had were not adjustable AND they sometimes kept my pistol locked in the rig. Major pain on occasion. Uncle Mikes kydex has worked for me as well as a Sidearmor rig.

I did compete in an IPSC match with a leather Sparks Summer Special. It worked well since I was shooting my carry gun from my carry rig. It was not as fast.

I often competed with a Don Hume Yaqui Slide in plain black unlined leather. A great rig that was multiple pistol compatable. It would be another good option to start off in IPSC.
