Springfield XD what do I need to know.

Springfield XD Tactical .40 S&W 5 inch bbl.....


What do I need to know about them? Are there any parts that are prone to breaking like the slidestop on a shadow or the block on a beretta? Who carries parts, mags etc. Do i need to replace the sites. Do the plastic basepads shatter on the mags?

I bought my last gun by saying, "it's shiney i want it" this time around I'm doing my due dilligence, and asking for your guys's input. thanks!
 
common small parts failure throughout

grip safety fails resulting in "dead man" trigger which is a massive liability

grip safety prevents cycling of slide so emergency manipulations tend to fail

XDs have failed virtually every competition for LE and mil contracts they have been entered into on account of reliability and parts breakage issues

That ought to about cover it.
 
1 - why would someone own something that is problematic and not worth owning???

2 - they're basically a copy of a Glock, they're NOT made by Springfield, and they add that silly grip safety thing for no reason at all


are you truly asking for overall input, or just reaffirmation of your choice and/or an ego stroking?
 
well i have about 5000 maybe 6000 rounds through my od green xd tactiacal in 40 and never changed anything its one of the most reliable pistols i have never jams nothing ever broke and is quite accurate and to top it all off i bought it used so its probably had about 2000 rounds on it before i got it only problem ive had was the front sight moved in the dove tail and i fixed that if i could post pics i would put up a zombi target i shot 100 rounds double taps all in the centre of mass or head shots i think there was about 9 rounds that dident score but not bad for 20 yards

I'm just wanting opions of those that have/had used them for IPSC.

I agree grip safety is useless, but so long as you hold teh gun properly is shouldn't matter. All guns have some issue or another. Some more severe than others. I'm just hoping to get some 1st hand opinion on them from those that have 1st hand experience with them. A friend of mine has an xdm he loves and another guy i shoot with has an xd9 he uses for IPSC and IDPA. those are the only 2 i've seen/fondled/shot. I liked them, they've never had any issues with them. But like i said in my origional post i want to do my due dilligence with them.

So far you guys haven't told me anything i didn't already know about. I'm looking for the little quircks you can only find out about by shooting them.

thanks that's what i'm looking for. do you like the origional sights? I'm thinking of putting a Fiberoptic front sight on if i get it....

do you shoot IPSC indoors at all? how do the mags hold up to being dropped on hard concrete floors?
 
well iam not a big fan of fibre optic sights dont even like the 3 dot sights or the white outline sights prefer straight black so i just cover in the white dots on the factory sights and go with it ,i might add i dont consider any semi auto pistol reliable till ive put 1000 or so rounds through it for a break in period ,not sure how others feel about this though

christ no, I wouldn't own one of those...their record is absolutely terrible

It is difficult to give you any further specifics because they have had issues with ALL of their small parts failing...and it's not like you can replace them all with better ones, so there isn't much advice to give.

The grip safety issues don't matter if you don't run the gun hard or expect to use it for defensive purposes...if you do then they are a serious defect, but again what advice is there? It's part of the design of the gun.

So other than "sell it and buy a gun that doesn't have those problems" nobody will really be able to give you much advice.

When you said you bought your last gun on impulse and this time around you wanted to do some research I just assumed you hadn't bought the gun yet, so I figured if you found out the deal with them, you wouldn't waste your money.

Post buy...not much you can do.
 
I have had an XD 9 tactical. It was my first pistol over .22 cal. I have to admit i had a hard time learning to shoot it because of its light weight. I had no problems with the grip safety and could rack off rounds faster than most. I liked the trigger and the mags were never a problem.. I shot it through out my first IPSC and IDPA season. I have heard of an XD 40 break and had to be sent away and it took 6 months to get it back..

I tried the aftermarket site thing and they are so hard to take out and put in the ones i got broke very shortly after installing them (Yah i did it myself)...

So all in all i did like my XD9 tactical but ended up selling it... just have moved on to all steel guns .. but i have to admit .. i am looking to getting a GLOCK in .45 ACP...

Clint Smith, Chuck Taylor, and Massad Ayoob all recommend the XD-45ACP. (So I bought one.)

I had an 5" XD45ACP Tactical, and I've had some time on the range with a 5" XD40 Tactical. They were both reliable and easy to hit with; magazines are inexpensive, and; parts are available from Brownells. But...there is the matter of the size. Unless you are Paul Bunyan-ish, in my opinion, they are way too big. I'm talking HUGE, with a HIGH bore-line, a HUGE butt, and - for someone accustomed to a 1911 or Glock trigger reset - even the trigger reset is HUGE. And I couldn't get any service in Canada. NO SERVICE. Springfield Armory did not answer any of my numerous and repeated email inquiries. When telephoned, numerous times, in each and every case they plead ignorance and transferred me to a voicemail account of a someone who never called back. I had paid $850., plus about $250. for magazines; I cut my losses and sold the XD-45ACP for $500. (The owner of the XD-40 also soon moved on; I think he sold that for $400.)

You know that cliche about "the happiest days of my life were the day I bought it and the day I sold it"? It was kind of like that.

There are many good pistol options out there. In my opinion, the XD is not one of them.
 
hmm so far 3 people who have had them. 1 says good 1 says bad and 1 say okish...

Anyone else have experience with them to share? i'm looking to get as much info from as many different people as i can.

All I have to say is, I have the XD9 and XD40. The 9mm has about 14,000 rounds and the .40 has 9,000 rounds and neither of them had a failure what so ever. I do have the fiber optics on mine (front is green and rear are red).

I shoot IPSC with either one and the mags have no issues when they drop on the concrete floor. As for outdoors, I see other shooters cleaning their mags with the brush when their mags drop in the sand. I can say, with mine a little lung power, reload them and away we go.

well it sounds like there is some xd haters here so i wont say too much

i have an xd9, this was my first restricted i bought, iv put about 1000 rounds through it with no problems.

and it is not at all like a glock, first of all its a single action with a grip safety, id say it has more in common with a 1911, i don't here anyone complain about the grip safety on 1911s.

i like the grip better than a glock

has ambi mag release

field stripping is kind of like a sig , super easy

the trigger is pretty good and there is trigger kits for them on brownells web site for less take up and lighten the pull for cheap. but i like the factory pull better than the glock anyway (i like single action triggers better)

well thats my 2 cents, i like mine

the difference there is that the 1911 grip safety doesn't generate deadman trigger issues, nor does it prevent the slide from being cycled when engaged.


Those are some serious design issues!
 
yeah well this is canada and i'm a civillian shooting IPSC so "self defence" is a moot point.


Misanthropist, while i appreciate your input, just saying "it sucks" isn't very helpful. I realize you've made a few more specific comments as well, but doing my own googling i haven't be able to confirm or deny them..

I'm not just looking to hear all good things, I do want to hear both sides for sure, but i was hoping to hear from both sides that have 1st hand experience.
