Good afternoon!

I am in the process of purchasing my first pistol. I've narrowed it down to the Springfield XDM in 45 ACP. However I'm torn between the 4.5 and the 5.25 models. I'm not a competitive shooter but that could possibly change. My gun club does have indoor and outdoor facilities with silhouettes. Just looking for opinions if anyone has used one or both models. Thanks in advance. :)

P.S. I do reload for rifle so I will probably reload for it down the road.

I have a 4.5 in .45ACP. I'm quite happy with is. I had a Powder custom short reset trigger kit installed and it became my favourite trigger on a plastic gun. I also have Trijicon's HD sights. It's my favourite modern pistol.

Love my 4.5" .45ACP. i have a short reset trigger as well and highly recommend getting it - makes a world of difference from the factory one. this is definitely the platform i shoot the best (bought the 9mm xdm 4.5" as well), they just feel right. as far as deciding between length, i think it will boiled down to personal preference. i cannot comment of the 5.25.

Owning many handguns in many calibers, I definitely prefer longer slides. Longer sight radius, more accuracy and in my opinion, better handling. In the case of the XD in 45, I'd go with the 5 inch. Go handle as many guns as you can get your hands on in different barrel lengths and go from there.

I'd go with 4.5" not a huge fan of long slides...Any reason for going with .45? 9mm is much more affordable.

45 ACP is just my personal preference. I have no problem with a 9mm and realize it is considerably cheaper to shoot. I'd probably buy that too in the not too distant future. Ammunition prices have never deterred me when it comes to firearms purchases. I do have a single stage press (Bonanza Co-Ax) so I would eventually like to reload for my pistol calibers as well.

You will enjoy it.
The 5.25 will balance out nicely once you insert a loaded mag.
Mags are a little pricy though. I feed mine PMC and it just eats it right up :)

I bought the 5.25 as well (except in 40 thou). You will not be disappointed. The only thing, as a few others have commented on, is the trigger. I could not double tap to save my life with the stock trigger. I bought the powder river precision drop in upgraded trigger and it is amazing quick and light. It's easily the best trigger I have in a striker fired type pistol. It's the closest thing to 1911 single action trigger I have used. I got mine thru IRUNGUNS. Do yourself the favour and buy a bunch of mags with it. It will be what's needed if you decide to compete and the XDM mags are seemingly really hard to come by in Canada for some reason.

for pistol, you'll probably want to look at a progressive press... it's so easy to shoot a few hundred rounds in a day and that gets tedious in a single stage set up
