My new Shadow came with a second mainspring and I am wondering what it's used for.

For when your first one wears out. Its not the famous #13 main spring if that's what you were hoping for. Lol.

Is there a problem with the springs wearing out that they feel the need to give you a replacement?

There's no point to it. Throw it out and order some 13# main springs, you'll never need more and they dramatically reduce the double action trigger pull.
On second though, don't throw it out. While you're waiting for your 13# main springs to show up in the mail, cut a few (3) coils off that second spring and install it. It'll lighten the double action pull and you still have the original if you screw it up and it doesn't work right any more.
