My Nephew shooting a Ruger semi-auto with a 3-9 Lyman.

The Bro-In -Law staking his prey with an old Cooey .22 1 shot (Old Iron Sights)
deadly within 50 yards.

First blood for my new Marlin 917 VSF sporting a 4.5 -14 Mueller APV and Harris Bi-pod, 112 yards . Very windy out today but I was very impressed with the .17 performance. Shooting into or having back to the wind any varmint within 150 was sure sorry they stuck their head out this Friday the 13th.

Always fun to catch one on the snow :D

Close up of carnage (squeamish alert!!)

Like I stated before I came away very impressed by the .17hmr performance today. While the .22LR was effective there were many cases of hit gophers making it back down their holes. The .17hmr knocked em down and kept them down

The 22 is frustrating cause they frequently make it back to their holes. At the very least, you need an aggressive HP bullet and a good solid chest hit. The 17 is more forgiving.

But I've always been and always will be a centerfire aficionado. Kills 'em dead before they hit the ground. Which may take several seconds with some hits :D

Yeah, the .22 is an overrated piece of crap. I mean it's only been around for 125+ years, killed everything that walks on this side of the planet, including a few bears. Who are we to assume it's good enough to use on gophers?

....yuh-huh... cause that's exactly what I said...

Sounds like someone has a massive inferiority complex here....

Better yet bring a 22, a 17, and a centerfire 22 next time out and have a whole bunch more fun. This way everyone is happy:D

try a 50 cal muzzle loader with 300 grain saboted hollow points for demolition. you only need to hit within 6 inches to kill them, a hit is devestating.

The original reason for my post was not to pit the merits of .22 vrs .17 HMR
but to express satisfaction in the performance of my .17.

The two .22's that we brought out with us on this little hunting soiree
were deadly. And I came away happy with my guns performance.

Thats it.

Bottom line is that Rimfires are fun and economical to shoot and even if I had traded my modern .17hmr for the old unserialized cooey .22 single shot that my bro-in -law used for the day ,the end result would have been the same....we both would still have walked away with s**t eating grins.

As for larger calibres... I deeply believe that nothing is to big for gophers and if possible I would have layed claymore mines and mortored the little beggars if I got the chance.:dancingbanana:

Cheers and Chill the frik out

Remember who the enemy is...The underground varmint terrorist.
