Spruce Grove Gun Club loses appeal

Should never have allowed homes built their and now it's a safety issue after one bullet hit a car I think it was. Maybe they could turn it into a shotgun range instead.

I sure hope this closure doesn't set an example for other range neighbors to try for closures. This could really be bad.

We discussed this at the executive meeting of my club. As I understand it, here is something that was used to attack them and the precedent it sets is very, very frightening. The neighbors complained about the noise, however, the noise from the range did not violate any of the local bylaws; it was the type of noise, that was a big issue. Apparently, just the sound of gunshots in the distance is enough to scare the sheeple, even when they know it's from a gun club and they had been hearing it for years, was enough to influence the local development appeal board. The stray bullet sometimes brought up, could not be shown to have originated from the range, by the RCMP ballistics lab. It was in the wrong direction, too far away, and too shallow an impact angle to have originated from the club. IMHO, it was probably done by one of the whining homeowners. The good news is all is not lost, for SGGC, yet. They will be closed for a while, but still are not completely out of legal options to reopen.

Ranges in general need to be vigilant regarding developments in their area. Gotta fight it early cause as soon as people move in beside the airport, they'll start complaining about airplanes.....

So true. We need to be as diligent and forceful as any whiny homeowners can be, to stop the developers even before they put a shovel into the ground. We need to stop the libtarded idiots before they have a chance to become our "neighbors". For gun clubs, the best neighbors are no neighbors at all.

What a shame. I live 2kms from that range. I've never had any issues. I know a couple who live next to it. I've been to some of the meetings for the residents. It's a gong show. I sure am glad I live where I live.

Yes, somebody made a whole sh__load of $$$ from the housing developments built around the range. But, the range was there first, it was a preexisting fact in the area. People freely chose to buy there, knowing full well that there was a range. It's a pity that the club can't come back on those whining idiots for the $$$ involved in moving or whoever allowed the development in the first place. I guess the term "caveat emptor" doesn't apply to whiny, libtarded, soccer moms.

Damn right they did, including some councillors. Atim Creek development plan was exactly the same. Politicians can be scum sucking criminals. Opps....was that my outside voice?

Thats too bad they lost the battle, clubs should oppose any new development when it starts getting to close for comfort. Our range has bought a few of the neighbouring properties and rents them out.

If there is evidence of collusion a good lawyer may be able to help

Ideally the surrounding residents in their "new" homes will have their taxes jacked up significantly in order to pay for the relocation of the range.

Good argument for allowing suppressors perhaps.

Bingo! Perfect solution to keeping the ever encroaching masses of idiots from whining about noise pollution as well as saving our own ears. Of course, shooters must be aware of the dangers of aerial shooting with their guns as well in order to ensure a safe zone in
the area of the ranges being used.

Containment is the go phrase these days when referring to where projectiles are propelled at ranges, and so it should be as well for sound suppression.

In the end various levels of government in their endless quest for tax dollars, the huge money involved in residential development and the fact that councillors and Reeves/Mayors see gun clubs as more hassle than they are worth makes survival for clubs in some locations almost impossible. What clubs and their members can do is avoid giving the opposition excuses to shut them down. Noise and property value arguments are one thing, "scary" safety violations are another.

Years ago, the president of one of Alberta's Sportsman's associations suggested all the shooting organizations in the province should get together and develop a "Super Club" in a central location a good distance away from the QE2 corridor. As we lose clubs one at a time through the years, shooters would still have a base of operations and a fall back club. A lot of reasons why that would never work came to mind, driving distance being the first. I have since come to the conclusion that I would drive as far as necessary, but not as often as I currently do.

I do sometimes wonder what "Super Club" would have looked like now if the idea had taken off. Imagine every shooting sport in the province, available in one location. A site developed with the combined efforts of every discipline.
