Im wanting to upgrade to a more of a target rifle from my Weatherby Vanguard . Im looking at the R700 SPS AAc and the R700P LTR and will be using a 4-16 vortex diamondback hp. Recently the LTR has gone up in price , Is it worth the extra 500 bucks for the police LTR vs the AAC ? Look like other then a better stock and a fluted barrel they are similar .

Are you talking .308 or .223? If it's for a .308, I'd go with the AAC. The main difference between the 2 is that the LTR has a nicer stock but the AAC has a threaded (key if you want to use a muzzle brake) 10 twist barrel vs the LTR's 12 twist. A 10 twist is what you want for the heavier pills (175 and up). I'm biased in that I have a 20" AAC-SD in .308. The Hogue stock that comes with it is garbage. I swapped it out for a Boyd's Pro Varmint that I bedded and installed a Stiller DBM. So for slightly less than the LTR, I had a rifle with a barrel more suited to long range shooting, a more or less equivalent stock and a bottom metal that feeds from a AICS pattern detachable magazine. A different model you might want to look at is the R700 Magpul edition. 22" 10 twist threaded barrel in a magpul adjustable stock with magpul dbm.

sorry yes 308 . I actually don't even care about the threaded barrel to be honest as I won't be using a muzzle break . Is the stock that bad ? This makes me want to just get the LTR then if i have to upgrade . I will be using 150 or 168 grain bullets i don't reload .

I like the LTR. The stock is fantastic and the Parkerized finish is very rugged. The early LTR's came from the Remington custom shop but even so, the newer ones are capable of 1/2" groups with the 20" barrel. The rifle is light and compact enough to hunt with.

I've never bothered with a bulky precision rifle or a custom build because the LTR does it all well in a small package for a decent price.

The HS Precision stock is a beauty and has the two front sling studs. I added a Timney trigger and HS Precision bottom metal and magazine to perfect a couple of shortcomings, however they are entirely unnecessary.

The Hogue stock rubs the barrel when you use a bipod or bags.

I have the LTR in 308. For me it came down to how much money I was going to put in after I bought the rifle. If you're going to leave it stock then get the LTR. If you're going to ditch the stock, get a new trigger, change out the magazine well and generally put a bunch a of money into it then get the SPS. However looking back I would've got a tikka. Bought a discontinued T3 to replace a 30-06 I retired, did the upgrades to what a T3X offers and IMHO it's just a better gun than the 700. And that bolt is so smooth.

LTR is a great rifle out of the box....advantages are the HS Precision stock, parkerized finish, and 40X trigger (albeit not all have shipped with the 40X over the years).
AAC is a great barrelled action but the stock is junk, trigger upgrade is nice, and the cheap finish needs to be stripped if you decide to have it refinished (properly)......so need to weigh out the cost and how much you like to tinker.

5R Milspec is also offered in 20" threaded if you can find one....still needs a better trigger though.

Right on thanks . So the 40x is the better trigger then the mark pro ? I'm happy with the 2 stage in my vanqgurd s2 how does it compare to that .

Yup.....40X is a better trigger for sure, but it's no Jewel. That being said a properly tuned X-Mark, or old style Remmy trigger can still be pretty nice. Timney is a reasonably priced replacement as well.

Nightforce 5.5-22x50 set in ATRS low rings. These were handloads from a friend that suited the rifle perfectly. Just grabbed a Razor and some matched precision rings and a case of gold medal match so will see if the results are the same.
