Squeezing Accuracy Out of the Mosin 91/30!

Oddly enough I have a prewar refurb 91/30 that shoots low at 100 with the bayonet on. Great group but have to have the sight set to 200

You could always file the front post down a bit at a time with the rear sight at 100 and calibrate your sites dead on.

That is strange though, almost all Mosins I have shot fired high.

It's almost comical how very different every Mosin really is lol :p

With what ammo? Btw, the standard load for a mosin had a flat/open base bullet. Something to think about when we assume the guys who sighted these things where sipping solvent. Might also explain why the soviets refurbed rifles with rough bores & deemed them fit for service. How many enfields with loose bores shoot BT bullets well?

Well the Soviet army of WWII was the largest mobilized army in the world at that time. In both WWI and WWII they were desperately short on small arms, more so WWI. So its not surprising that their standards may not have been the highest when it came to refurbing & reusing.

If my barrel is already re-crowned (by the Soviet Arsenal I assume), I don't need to do it myself right?

Well the crown will either be in good condition or not. Its one of those thing where its present condition is what matters, not whether its been done before or not. Re-crowing is not a one time fix, but its not routine maintenance either. If you ever need to do it, it could be something you only have to do once. But over a long period of time a gun could have a number of re-crowning procedures done to it.

Also, there's a bit of difference between recrowning & counterboring. Recrowning focuses on the muzzle and could include shortening the barrel length, while counterboring just cuts back the bore inside the barrel. Both essentially focus on evening out the front of the bore so gases behind the bullet escape evenly as the bullet leaves the rifling.

Silvertip surplus. Shot well and great but just low.
