Swung at some fast moving potential dinner tonight. As usual, first shot was a miss. Flicked the pump real quick for #2 and the gun went Buuuuurp...

I had another round in the chamber before my brain screamed STOP!

Cleared the gun and when i looked down the barrel i was staring at blocked barrel. The 3 layered wad was jammed tight behind the full choke.

I remember seeing black "crap" coming out of barrel before i put the brakes on.

The barrel and action are fouled to hell and stink like something i can't describe.

Bad gunpowder? Contaminated round? Definitely more than just the primer going off.

From right to left, first round fired, second round fired, wads tapped out of barrel with wooden dowel.

The 2nd shot is obviously an older round, must have been a leftover from an older box.

I've never seen a shotshell "melt" like that.

Thoughts?

No idea what went wrong, and looking forward to hearing from the more experienced about what potentially happened, but good for you for putting on the brakes in a the heat of the moment.
Well done!

Wait, is the problem the first or second shot?

OP, was there any shot in the barrel, or just wads plugging it?

All of that wadding is from one round?

We had a fellow at the club have a very similar 'burn out' about a while ago, fortunately he was shooting singles and the problem was isolated immediately. Everyone stopped and looked after his 'shot' because it was a muffled poof followed by the pellets bouncing off of the trap house. He cleared the wad out of the barrel and after inspection of the hull and wad the general agreement was that it was an old load with a partial defective powder burn. The ignition was enough to push the lead 16 yards but enough unburned powder remained in the shell to burn the plastic hull and stink and smoke. This sure brings to mind how quickly someone would have to react shooting doubles if this happened to them.

No pellets in the barrel. All 3 wads came from round 2 (defective round) it sounds EXACTLY how SJB describes it above. I need to dissect another round. See if there are 3 wads. Maybe that was the problem? 3 wads and almost no powder.
