What kind of red dot did you use? Will this handle fit an AR handle type mount? I really don't want to remove the handle, and the red dot idea sounds very good, but wouldn't it be too high? Handle+mount+optic...
It was many years ago.
I used a cheap Tasco red dot that I had kicking around. Canadian Tire for $35 or something like that.
I left the handle on and I had to make a wedge to mount on top of the handle. I'm not and never was a "black rifle" guy so I didn't know anything about rails and mounting systems.
The wedge was necessary because if you simply mounted the red dot on the handle as is, the dot pointed somewhere around 1/2 way up the barrel. So a wedge was needed to keep the red dot looking parallel with the barrel.
So I simply cut a 1/4 " piece of metal, drilled and tapped for two screws, then drilled corresponding holes in the handle and screwed the wedge to the handle.
I also had to make a groove in the wedge for the red dot to "clamp" onto.
As I mentioned above, it looks like the Mossberg Tactical .22 uses the same wedge type system to mount a red dot, but it is a proper pincatinny (or whichever) mount so will obviously fit many different scopes and sights.
As far as being too high, yes it was fairly high, but for me it looked like an m16 I saw in a movie or something (I was young and impressionable). It made the sight high enough that you almost didn;t have to lean your head at all to see through it. Like I mentioned earlier - this made for a really comfortable position. You lose the use of the open sights though.
Look at the mossberg website and find the tac .22. It has a good picture there of the mount. I haven't looked at it for a while so I can't remember if it would need any modification to fit the squires.
