Hi I recently bought a semi-auto Squires Bingham 22 from
another CGN. and am having problems with it jamming.
It seems the action does not go back far enough to reset the firing pin.Is this a common problem with the Squires?
Could it be the main spring,if thats what its called, has too much tension?

Semi-auto .22's are particular about what ammo they'll both shoot well and cycle the action. You'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle will both shoot well(just don't expect too much from a Squires though) and cycle the action. The cost of said ammo means nothing either.

When they work they work very well- over the years I had three different SB M16's.
My guess is, it needs a good cleaning. Remove the action from the stock, undo the screw that holds the rear action cap on, carefully unthread it while holding the cap so the springs don't go flying, and remove the bolt and springs. My bet is it's gummed up to hell, give it a good clean.
Make sure the springs go in straight and not bent or kinked which could lead to short cycling, maybe that is the problem as well.

There's a tripping lever you need to trip with a little punch to get the bolt back in if I remember right. There is also a screw that comes loose that holds the trigger group to the action tube, blue Loctite it and tighten it up.

Squires Bingham.......not exactly a Weatherby !

He should have bought the next grade up model which probably sold in the Eaton's catalogue for $49.95 (with the scope). My dad had one....it jammed so much he finally wound up using it as a car jack handle.
