squirrel hunting tips/tricks

I'm not an aggressive squirrel hunter by any means...I usually just walk the bush and shoot em as I see em. Some days you get some, some you don't...its just the nature of hunting!

Used to hunt them with my dad in his 70 Chevy PU driving old logging roads.....kinda be a game on who could get the most, driver gets left side and passenger gets the right

I picked up a HS squirrel call last year.. surprisingly it works extremely well for locating early season treerats. a few chuckles and a bark and 7 out of 10 time you'll get a bark back. Using a .17hmr with CCI solid non expanding bullets this year as I pushed my limits of distances last few years with my custom .22lr....

1 rimfire 1 scatter gun. 1 buddy. However I just go and sit in my deer stand and play on my phone. Snipe the tasty lil basterds with my savage using cb longs when they run by

I've found sitting does work much better but the leaves have to be at least thinned out a bit first for that to work, otherwise it's just damn frustrating. OP where are you located approx.. Might be able to "share" some spots with you for early season.

Set up a bird feeder, seems to bring them in in droves in the city :) just like saying all you need to hunt ducks is a park bench :)

I had success years ago I southern Ontario on squirrels with an accidental technique. I found that during the bow season rattling antlers attracted a lot of squirrels. Tried the following fall in September/October with great results. Seems the tree rats like to watch a deer fight....

Are the red ones any good for eating? We don't have any of the fat grey squirrels where I hunt. They're too busy trying to move into the rafters of my garage in the city.

or just go deer or turkey hunting. Apparently they know you're not there for them and generally scare the crap out of you on a regular basis when all is quiet and you are focused on staying quiet and watching for other game.. I first got into squirrel hunting to thin them out in the bush I hunt deer and turkeys in because I was getting frustrated with the numbers that would startle me and get my blood going thinking it was a deer coming in... Good adrenaline rush though and kept the "buck fever" away since when I did hear them coming in I figured it was just more treerats..lol

Try coyote hunting in a ghille suit and have a squirrel jump down on your back and tangle his claws in the burlap. that gets the heart pounding

I was still hunting in the woods behind my parents place one day and heard some movement nearby. I froze and moments later a squirrel comes rocketing out of the bushes making a beeline for my leg. I moved when he was in mid leap and I don't think I've ever seen an animal look more panicked! He managed a mid air backflip followed by pedalling wildly at the ground without gaining traction for a split second before shooting off to wherever he came from. Kind of looked like something out of Looney Tunes.
