Last night at our local shooting club, we were asked to propose squirrel hunting in Quebec...... (With or without dogs). Any comments??
Thanks for your input!!

Been hunting squirrel for years. I don't see how dogs are of any help, you get a mutt crashing through the bush and the bushytails simply hide without trace.

All you need to do is walk very slowly through a populated area- and when one runs up a tree and jumps from branch to branch, run with him. He'll stop after a minute or so and begin poking his head out to see if you're still there. Meanwhile you're a couple of trees away with a scoped .22lr rifle resting on the position.. plink him behind the ear and its all over. A nice dinner awaits later on. :)

Or you can be like these idiots who run the dogs and blast away with shotguns far out of reasonable range and cripple these respected small-game animals.. Thats my own opinion, but I'm pretty sucsessful at this. Feel free to PM if you wish.

tasty for you or tasty for the first critter to stumble across it? Not sure I'm "nuts" about eating them...

A nice fat black squirrel stew is mighty tasty. You use take the hindquarters you can aslo gut and roast them. Shoot them with a scoped 22 or 22mag and you doent have anything to worry about.

...but how to skin?

What's the best way to keep the squirrel hair out of the food? I shot and ate squirrels for the first time this year. I tried cutting partly through the tail, and then stepping on the tail and pulling on the hind legs. That just pulled the tail off:eek: So on the next I did it like a rabbit by cutting through the back skin and pulling apart. That worked but there was still lots of hair. What's the trick?

Despite your experience, a dog can be an aid to hunting squirrels. The dog, moving ahead of the hunter, probably spots the squirrel first, at which time you take up a position that gives you the expectation of a decent shot. The squirrel doesn't like the dog, so moves to the opposite side of the tree - the side of the tree that you are watching. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I prefer rifles to shotguns, but I have found that poor sportmanship is not limited to one's equipment. There is an inherint danger in thinking you have the only correct answer. That mindset creates divisions within the hunting community and these divisions are a weakness to be exploited by the anti's. If a fellow is hunting legally, there is little room for complaint. If he is not report him.

Very important info right there. As tempting as it is the chattering little bastard Red squirrels can only be taken by trappers.:D

(in Ont.)

I hate those lil buggers.. scare the #### out of you when your trying to be real quiet, alone in the bush grouse hunting then one of them pops their cute lil head out at you screaming at you

...Then I rain some lead at them, and feed it to my dog. He loves those things!! He can naw through a pork neck in about 15 mins, and it takes him about the same time trying to rip the skin off those things.

Please, if you value the health of your dog- don't give him leadshot meat. Aside from the primary risk of him ingesting metal, the residual lead can seep into his bloodstream and cause all kinds of problems..

Besides, why waste squirrel on the dog anyway? BBQ bushytail is a treat! ;)
