Squirrel rifles

Where do you get squirrel calls?

i use the primos squirrel call as well as 2 plastic screws.
i used to use the 2 coin method but I kept losing money in the woods so i got 2 plastic screws and scrape the plastic threads of the screws against each other . it sounds just as good. I tie them together with strings to my jacket so they don't get lost.
my method is that i walk slowly around the woods looking around and looking for signs of squirrels.
things like cut up nuts chopped pine cones are a dead giveaway, green leaves out of sorts etc.
i sit down against a tree and make myself small. wait 5 min for the woods to settle down. usually they start to show themselves. if that don't work i do a bit of cutting and chewing using the plastic screws. they will usually pop their heads out from behind a tree to see who's eating what. if that dont work after a few min' i use the primos call and make a few barks just to locate them. they will bark back wherever they are. I use this to help locate them and this method has never failed me yet.
i also sometimes use what i call " a crazy squirrel going bonkers call" it's a wild combination of barks and chatters and they usually get all pissed off and they bark back just as loud.
finally i use the crazy squirrel call in combination with a squirrel in distress call.... at this point there will usually be several squirrels answering your call scampering to see what's the fighting about. they will move from branch to branch. beware that this call my call in more than just squirrels at this point.
I bought my squirrel call at la beron but i heard they don't exist anymore. you could probably buy it anywhere they sell primos calls.
here is a video showing the call

For me I use a scoped Anschutz 1710 and CCI quiet ammo. It has been quite a deadly combo. The beauty of this combo is that head shots are the norm. The issue I am having is trying to find good places to hunt them. I usually just set up in a hide and just take them out from 25-50 meters. I use the coin method of just a little dab of peanut butter on the sunny side of a tree trunk and they come out of the woodwork.

Can't say I've ever hunted squirrel, but if I did, my savage mkii with a cheap 3 to 9 rimfire scope would get the call. I don't like the scope though, really need something better...

Nobody use an air rifle? Benjamin NP Trail 2 with 14.3gr premier hp at 20yrds

I used to use airguns butwith the variety of 22 ammo on the market ive moved back to rimfire. Faster and can be quieter while offering more range and punch. Alot of the squirrels i shoot are often within 20 yards. However i enjoy sniping them further with my mach2

All you need is a 22 and the cheapest 22 ammo that will feed through an old mangled cooey 22. It doesn't take much to kill a squirrel.

You've never hunted squirrels... no squirrel hunter would make that statement... the gear has nothing to do with killing them... it is designed to "hit" them... more specifically shoot them through the eyeball at 50-75 yards. A "mangled Cooey" and the "cheapest ammo" won't cut it. Sure you might get a couple careless, young squirrels at 20 yards, but day-in, day-out you need a precision shooter to be consistently successful. If you are out for a stroll plinking and shooting, bring your Cooey, if you are out seriously hunting squirrels, bring an accurate rifle and the ammo that it shoots best and a quality scope zeroed well and know your trajectory and drift. The best squirrel hunters are usually very good shooters as well.

I guess im lucky for being in a squirrel rich environment. I could and have limited out many times using a cooey 39 and ferderal bulk ammo. However i enjoy using a scoped rifle as my eyes arent as good and having much more accurate rifles increase the opportunities for more shots. The problem is it makes a hunting trip much shorter so i just hold up by a fallen tree and wait instead of stalking around and plinking.
However this season my knee and tendon should be good enough to allow me to stalk and crawl around

Some times i take my favorite rifle out my rossi 37 pump. Even though its not a tack driver i never manage to come home with less than my limit

I picked up a CZ 452 Varmint this spring, it is proving to be very accurate with Federal GMM, 100 yards just over one MOA out of the box and I have since added a Yo Dave trigger spring and bushing kit, Area 419 rail, and a Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18. I am definitely gonna try some squirrel hunting this fall.
