I've had a 40 year love affair with squirrel hunting... I love the pace, I love the timber that I hunt them in... I love the tricky, precise shooting required... and I love squirrel stew and shake n' bake squirrel... my current squirrelly rifle is a CZ 452 Lux with a Leupold VX-2 3-9X40mm.

What kinda squirrels you hunting?

Grey and Fox squirrels are fair game year round, without a hunting licence in BC. Gotta love Schedule C animals.

I spent several years in SW Ontario 50 years ago....I really enjoyed hunting and eating grey squirrels, with my Mod 61 Winchester 22 LR. I'm not tryin' to one up you HOYT....I'm just older...

HOOT....I've been doin the Fawn Rehab thing for over 20 years...Is this what ya call Robbin' a thread, I'm Sorry.....All we have around North Bay are Red squirrels, and flying squirrels.

I do quite a bit of squirrel hunting during the fall/winter here in SW Ontario.
My weapon of choice is a Winchester Wildcat .22lr with a 3-9 power Bushnell scope.

They are such good sport, very smart sometimes, but I've figured out a few tricks.

My favourite tree-rat hunting accessory, besides my gun, is firecrackers (the little ones in paper packages, that will go off in a chain reaction). What I do is I take apart the package, separating the individual firecrackers, and then use them as "flash-bangs". When a squirrel is hiding inside a tree, or "bellying" on the top of a branch, the noise of the firecracker will often psyche them out, and they'll abandon their hiding spot.

One thing that I've had happen (more than once), is to have a squirrel lead me into a trap of sorts.
They'll meander along the ground, staying just out of range, and lead me into a patch of thick brush.
Once I'm in the brush, where I can't see very far or move very fast, they'll make a dash for it, and I won't be able to see where they go.

No joke, this has happened twice, and I think it's on purpose.
Smart little fellas.

You don't think so? I always describe the meat as dark meat chicken. Could be in my cooking though.

This is how I describe it too, a dark, slightly tough piece of chicken.
One way I've cooked squirrel is to bone out the meat, cut it into bite-sized pieces, and bread and fry it.
"Squirrel nuggets" I call them, very good with some mustard for dipping.
