squirrel season anyone?

any manitoban squirrel hunters around?? Ive been wanting to give it a shot, and although im not against heading out on my own it would be nice to pick up a few pointers from someone more experienced
 
I once heard that Daniel Boone, the famous pioneer, used his big .50 calibre muzzle-loader to shoot squirrels.
Apparently, he would aim for a spot on a tree just an inch or two from where the squirrel was.
The sheer force of the impact, that close to the squirrel, would kill or stun it.

Could be just a legend, but it sounds possible.

It is not legend... it is called "barking" and it is still done today by the traditional BP crowd.

Correct... In shooting soft lead at hardwood branches and/or tree trunk next to the squirrel there is a violent explosion of bark which dislodges and stuns and or kills the squirrel... most barkers carry a billy club... I'll say no more on that... ;)

Trapped and relocated about 6 of these bastards off the farm so far. I always called them grey ground squirrels, what is the proper name for these burrowing bastards.
 

Im going to have to start blowing them away if the bastards keep ending back in the farm yard. I usually shoot everything but some reason I dont with these guys.

If thats a Case Agri King 770 or 870 type model, this is a gentlemanly piece of equipment and tip my hat to you sir!
(and for live trapping the squirrels)
 
I figured out what kind of squirrel I posted a picture and video of. Its a Franklins ground squirrel, so far we took 8 of em out of the yard.
