I'm looking for a new plinker. Which one is the best one of the bunch? I know the Ruger is the most expensive, and the Remington the least. But only around $100 seperate them. Are there any others to consider besides the 10/22 or regular 597?

.22

Well there " B " I'd be happy to put my LHB 597 .22 against anything in the stock price bracket. Let's avoid the whole Ruger vs Remington debate but all the makers have their share of lemons. Probably one of the best ,22's that I've owned for both ergonomics and accuracy ( Yes, I've owned several 10-22's )

I would steer clear of anything realted to the 597. Absolute f**king garbage IMO.

spoken like someone too incompetent to adjust guide rods properly.

I spent hours trying to get the thing to run. I know plenty of people have 597s that work. I was not one of them. I had read that the guide rods are often over tightened and spent more time than I should have trying to find the proper tension. Stock mag, aftermarket... Still jammed. I replaced some of the internals such as the springs and extractor. Still didn't run. I ended up selling it for much less than half of what I paid.I remember it would fire in bursts as well. Didn't seem to matter how clean it was. I got a lemon, plain and simple. It soured my view of 597s. That's why I said "IMO".

I've put 300 rounds through my VTR in the last week and had two duds (thats the shells fault not the gun). Every shell fed perfect and it shoots really good! I was shooting Winchester 333's and I never had to adjust one thing to make it work the way flawlessly. Mine is still completely stock as well.

Put 500 rounds through my sr22 this morning, love every bit of it, feels great, looks cool ( i think) not one single issue with it. Fed from 25 rounders and 10 rounders just the same. As fast as I could pull the trigger she fired.

Seriously looked at the vtr, but I did not like the idea of spending almost as much as the ruger and having to adjust it right out of the box, thats not for me, spending 400ish bux and having to fix a rifle. More aftermarket for the ruger if that floats your boat too.

I'm thinking of throwing a 20" bull barrel on mine... just cuz hahah

Ruger 10-22's in my experience, have never fed properly with a full aftermarket mag, that includes my buddies who also have the 10-22's. If it is a 25 round magazine, in order for it to cycle properly, it has to be 24 or 23 rounds in it and not full. My own 10-22, I sold because it was so picky with ammo.

In my experience, and I have owned 3 of them, and fired 2 more, none of them had a single issue with any aftermarket mags with steel lips.
25 round for all, not an issue ever.

SR22 is my pick

I bought an SR22 and only did so after doing some research. I was going to buy the VTR597 but it has gotten a lot of negative press from some members on this site and elsewhere. I'm not sure if it is all true but it scared me away from them. I think the SR22 is awesome.

ive had plenty of trigger time with both guns and im glad i went with the VTR personally. They are both tinker toys. Spending the extra money on the ruger wont save you the possibility of having to tweak it out of the box. Want a flawless 22? dont buy either!!

as a newbie, i can't really comment on which is better considering i've never fired either one. awhile back, i was looking to get my self a 22lr rifle... ended up on the same dilema, will it be a VTR or the SR22? based on what i've read from forums similar to this one, i ended up ordering a SR22.

finally came this morning thru mail. a few things that i noticed on the one i received today:

- handguard a little wobbly when i got it. easy fix though; it was just a matter of tightening the two screws that hold the handguard assembly.

- the v-block, based on its location, seems to push the barrel slightly upwards. i was under the impression that the barrel (looking from the muzzle end) will be centered on the round handguard. either the handguard or the barrel is misaligned. i'll tinker with this one before i bring it to the range this weekend.

- the retractable stock is pinned. that is what i ordered in the first place... a "fixed" retractable stock. easy fix... 'just replaced a different stock.
everything else seems to be in order. given the time, i shall do mods on the bolt release as described in other threads. pictures below shows what i've done to this new puppy of mine so far:

i have yet to see how this puppy performs. btw, i'm only limited to winchester high velocity rounds. i hope they will work very well with this rifle. i'll provide an update on performance once i take this to the range.

MP-161K, i bought one recently and its awesome. you would need high rings to set up a scope on it though just so you know. the only thing i have against it is it only comes with 2 9 round mags and i don't think you can buy any by itself

hey Woodbeef, I haven't had a chance to shoot the SR22, but I do have a 10/22. Same gun, just not as cool. I have shot the 597VTR, and liked it. My experience is this, 597 is more accurate, but picky with ammo. 10/22 is not as accurate, but will shoot just about any ammo I feed it. Don't get me wrong, the 10/22 is an accurate shooter, but the 597 had a slight edge.

Bottom line is that both guns are wicked awesome, so I say buy both :runaway:
peace...

Well I have the Baikal and the Ruger SR, and for me being a larger fellow I prefer the Baikal. I think the stock trigger is better in the Baikal, the size of the stock is muck more comfortable. The Baikal comes with an open sight, and an extra magazine. Neither of them are what you would call tack drivers so I think the accuracy is about the same. If you are a bigger guy, I'm 6'5", I think you will like the feel of the Baikal.
Do not know anything about the 597. FS

I own both and a custom shop 1022 and the ONLY problem I have with any is the lack of aftermarket mags for the 597, out of the box the ruger feels a bit beefier but change the grip on the 597 and there all good the 597 does jam up a bit more than my ruger , could be the ammo i have on hand as well, no clip feed issues but dont use junk ramline mags (other than for targets) benefit of a 1022 platform is the aftermarket goodie world, there is no limit to crap you can buy for them :)
