I've got the locking ring off and the handguard off, but the barrel nut is still attached to the forearm adapter. Inside the barrel nut, there's 4 very shallow, semi-circular longitudinal grooves...guess some kind of special tool fits in those grooves? Any MacGyver solutions to removing it?

Do I even need to remove it as I'm looking at a carbine FF handguard, do these havea standard thread?

I think I've seen these answers before... A search might help, either on here or Rimfire Central.

But, from what I recall, the thread should be the same, so you can just reuse the nut. I think the Dlask handguards come with a new nut though, and some other ones might too. If you want to get it out, then you can wrap an old belt or something around the original one, then use a vise grip (or a vise), clamp it down, and rotate it off. You may have to use some heat as well... IIRC, Ruger likes to use a lot of thread locker on it, so some people have reported heating the nut to reflow the stuff, then cranking on it. Maybe boiling water might help...

Heat, heat, heat and more heat. Well thats what it took to get mine off, boiling water might do the trick, I just used a blowtorch however. Almost impossible to get off without heat due to the amount of thread locker on there. After you heat it up an old piece of belt or something similar and a swet of channel locks should do the trick to get it off without marring the threads on the nut if you wish to use it still.

thanks fellas. there was some blue stuff (lock tite I'm guessing) on the outer threads of the barrel nut that the hand guard screws on to. I had to use a heat gun on that for a few minutes.

I'll try the belt trick too.

Is there indeed a tool that is designed to lock into those crescent shaped grooves on the inside of the nut?

Edit - I could have swore I searched last night, and nothing came up. Today, search foo is working.
