Sr-22 vs m&p15-22

I took my new M&P 15-22 MOE to the range for the first time today. As a city shooter who only shoots at a range, it being restricted isn't an issue for me. Took me a while to get the Magpul sights adjusted, but once I did, it shot fine. Definitely need to get a red dot for it. I like that it has similar functionality to an AR. I think Gooch's comment above really is the key point, where do you plan on shooting?

Lets also keep in mind, an AR with a .22 conversion kit, is still a restricted weapon. Nothing beats the SR22 as an all around rifle IMO. The fact that it's the only decent tactical rifle out there that's non-restricted only solidifies the point. Is it heavier than some of the others...sure, but it's also built to last, around a dedicated aluminum chassis. It's taken the best of the standard 10/22 and made it better as far as I'm concerned. And it's a lot less flimsy that most of the others I've tried *cough* Mossberg's 702 tactical .22....may as well be made by Fisher Price! *cough* )

Besides...it's not like you're running around carrying it in combat. It's a damn plinker for god sakes. If an 8lb rifle is going to ruin your day, you should probably spend a little more time in the gym. :D

I agree with you 100%. The SR is the...10th? Ruger .22 I've owned, and it's head and shoulders the best, by quite a bit. Very accurate out of the box..actually more accurate than one 10/22 that I spent a fair bit of money on accurizing. It is heavy, but if you're toting it around shooting gophers, a decent sling negates that problem right quick. It's rugged, solidly built and a lot more flexible in terms of what you can hang on it...optics, different grips, lights if you want them, lasers too. I didn't buy mine to turn it into an "AR wannabe"...I like the look of it, sure, but I like more the fact that it has taken the good things out of the 10/22 platform and stuck them all on one good gun.

I own both an AR with a 22 conversion kit with bolt hold-open and also a standard 10/22 with Tech Sigthts. I use both for different purposes.

For what it's worth, a buddy of mine bought a M&P 15-22 a couple of months ago. He's got over 2k rounds through it now with no problems. The thing is dead reliable and has all the functionality of a full caliber AR. So, you can practice all the battery of arms and manipulations perfectly with it that you would normally do with an AR. That's not something you can do with the SR-22 as the controls are not the same.

So, as others have said, it depends on what you want. I say, buy a 15-22 and a 10/22. Much rimfire goodness that would be...
