SR comp with MR1

No I am talking about SR

No pistol in SR.

Your mag carry will work fine. If you are shooting the NSCC CofF then I believe you only need 3 mags. For the ORA, you need quite a bit more or you have to be stupid fast with mag chargers. I recommend more mags. I run 5-6 LARs with an extended base plate to give me 30 round length for support in the prone and kneeling.

Some of the better SR shooters around here are moving toward belt mounts for their mags like you suggest. I'm to stubborn, stupid or cheap to do that....yet.

I use a Norinco M14. Trust me I look with envy at the AR15 folks. Smaller lighter rifle. Way lighter ammo and mags. For me and the M14, the rifle with scope is around 11 pounds. 200 rounds and 10 mags around 17 pounds. More recoil to recover from. You get the picture.

Ah, but that's part of the fun! I wont shoot SR without my M14. Course, I got to come out for another match...

Let's be honest. You can try this and that, at the end of the day, you will be tired of all these suboptimal solutions you try to come up with to get around the AR15....

So why not just skip the pain and the time to be wasted, and head straight to an AR15? If budget is limited, get a norinco/DPMS/S&W low end AR and a Vortex viper 1-4X24, and drive on.

Ha ha. I think I ll just get a xcr before I go restricted. I am suprised that some enterprising company hasn t come up with an under $1500 NR rifle to accomodate Cdn laws. Make the darn thing modular to use after market AR upgrades. A decent quality rifle of this type would really fill a niche and be a financial winner.

I was going to recommend the MR1 to a friend who wants to come back to service rifle and not deal with the initial hassle of restricted and ATT's.
My only concern though is that the scope has to be mounted quite high, above the iron sights, and it seems more of a chin wield.
Hopefully Benelli makes the rear iron sight an option and / or easily removed. The reviews I read online is that it isn't.

You don't have to shoot 223 though. Any semi auto where you can get lots of mags will work. If you wanted to give it a try before you go AR maybe consider a M-14 ala Norinco?

I am sure if someone made an AR type platform with wood furniture instead of black plastic it could be classified non-restricted.
Now it would look disgusting - but for some reason wood is less scary than black plastic.
This is racism on the part of the CFC/RCMP! :)

If there was a decent non restricted option that would not break the bank (especially with mags) I could see service rifle numbers double/triple quickly.

The other option is to reform the ATT structure and make it less of a pain in the buttocks. That is a legal battle I would contribute $$$ too.

That is exactly how I am feeling about my approach to getting involved with SR.
If someone could make a NR receiver that would take most AR accessories, including barrels, then dang ditta dang, I would come out guns blazing....but not literally of course.

Can't a guy dream?

Are there NR CSA .223 VZ-58s that are accurate enough for SR? Do the AR mag adaptors work reliably? They sound like a pretty economical rig.

ggh, I've been right where you are now.

I discovered SR, and before I had my RPAL I was gung-ho non-restricted M14 all the way. Bought an M14 spring of 2010, (I have 3x of them now, I f-ing love these rifles) bought a chest rig, some decent pouches and 10x 5/20 mags. On top of that I bought and shot 2500+ rounds that summer.

So for say about $3000 + travel/memberships/match fees I had a helluva good time at the SR clinic and 2x matches I attended. Actually, I had the best time and was instantly hooked! I shot iron sights, and I got much better results than I had thought I would. But in reality, I was only competing against myself, but I was ok with that.

Then I got my RPAL, then I got a Norc M4, then I got a 1-4x PST.

Now, despite having 2x consecutive SR seasons shot to #### by real life (new baby, new house, blah blah blah) I'm practicing with the Norc and am all full of piss and vinegar for next season where I hope I can push myself and actually become competitive with the other shooters, because I love competition.

If you don't want a restricted, start with another non-r rifle you know you want to own anyways and have at it, because as Bolivar said, shooting with any rifle is better than not shooting at all. There is nothing worse than not shooting at all....

Happy Shopping!

Gdog, I must thank you sincerely. I have shot in military and tactical comps, and have that itch to keep shooting and competing.
I can shoot the crap out of my duty diemaco c8, 14.5 barrel. Great rifle. I am near a final decision. I will probaby get a used mini 14 target
and modify it beyond recognition. Lol Use that until I can save for a xcr. I love precsion and cqb shooting - SR seems like
an excellent blend of boh. Again, thanks for the encouragement. :)
