anybody having any issues with the front sight breaking off under recoil on the SR1911's ? I love how this gun functions and I have only put about 500 rounds through it but today when I was at the range, I only got off about 20 rounds and the front sight blade snapped off and disappeared!!! I was just wondering if anybody else has seen this before? Any input would be great.

P.S. this gun has never been abused or dropped and has only fired about 500 Norinco 230 grain rounds.

cheers Tyler

yes the same thing happened to my sr1911 (however mine did it when I was still going through the new love phase - 2nd week after getting it). I searched and searched for the right dimensions for a replacement, but turned out to be a waste of time. I went to a local gun shop, Italian sporting goods, and they sent it back to ruger for repair for free! btw that's great customer service, cause they knew I didn't purchase it from their store. it was returned to me good as new after a week or so. I thought that if I got the same sights that it might happen again, so I was looking for an alternative, but I like the original sights and for all the thousands of sr1911's out there, this is a rare problem.

it seems to be an issue between certain serial numbers, i think it was just a bad batch from novak mine has had about 1800 rounds through it and no issues some other guys it broke after 100 or so rounds i have had to replace 8 out of 10 in one batch you can get a replacement if you contact carol pitre @ location snapshot 1-450-427-0052 i beleave they have a bunch in stock and will ship them free of charge or you can purchase an after market on from brownells or a site sponsor..... cheers

A really nice fibreoptic replacement sight for the Ruger is the .220 tall Dawson sight.I tried the Ruger factory fibreoptic sight, and it was the completely incorrect dimension, gun shot about a foot high with it and was really tough to fit.

Who did you get that Dawson sight from sevoman if you don't mind me asking? My sight broke also and the Hi Vis I got was way out of wack too. It shot a foot high. Thanks

The Ruger fibreoptic replacement sight works fine on my SR1911, it measures approximately .215" blade height. A fair bit of fitting required though, so unless you are familiar with this process, employ a gunsmith to do it for you.
What did your sight measure sevoman? It seems very unlikely Ruger would intentionally supply a sight specifically for the SR1911 that was that far out of spec., perhaps another sight was accidentally substituted. The only other remote possibility is that the sight was installed backwards, the shorter notched end faces forward when correctly installed. If it was installed reversed, the pistol would definitely shoot high.

Mine broke off last week, sent the slide to Snapshot. Just waiting for it to come back now. Sure hope Ruger has got to the bottom of this.

You too? - Waow that's crazy.

I hope Snapshot marks the slides properly. We certainly don't want them mixed. :)
(no matching serial number on the slide, if I'm not mistaken)

Good luck trying to get a Dawson Precision sight...they are not registered with ITAR.

I tried to buy a Novak sight from Brownells - no dice, Novak is not registered with ITAR either. The only quality sight I could find in Canada was the Ruger fibreoptic said to be made by Novak for Ruger. I am very happy with it, similar height to the original and machined out of steel bar stock.
