I bought one of those fake cans (from Questar) that backs over the barrel adding no length to it. It screws on smoothly to a certain point (about half way), then won't go any further. Is the barrel not uniform all the way through? Anyone have any suggestions?

NOTE: I tried to put this on a friend's SR22 and it wouldn't even slip over the barrel.

What barrel do you and your friend have? Is it a spikes can? I believe they're made to be used on barrels that are .75" or small in diameter.

Whatever the stock barrel is on the SR22. Yes it is a spikes can. It slips over the barrel perfectly (on mine, but not my friends). Just gets really tight as I screw it on. To the point where I can't screw it on completely.

The thread in the can is to tight , or dirty , or painted over . And who threaded your barrel ? Do other muzzlebrakes or flash suppressors fit freely on your threaded barrel ?Also check to see if the can is hitting the little barrel suport you have inside the handguard .

The can is not painted or dirty. It's a spike's tactical can bought new from Questar. The barrel came threaded from the manufacturer. My norinco AR flash hider fits on no problem. It's not hitting the barrel support because I have removed it.

This can backs over the barrel adding no length to it. When I turn the can around and screw it on, it fits perfectly. Having done this, I assume that the barrel is not uniform all the way through.

Sounds like you may be starting to hit the taper on your OEM barrel. SR22 OEM barrels are 0.750 at the muzzle but, further down the barrel it starts to taper. take the hanguard off and see if there is any marks on the finish of the barrel to see if its hitting the taper. Could be just a slight machining difference between the two barrels. Mine had a bit of a high spot on the barrel a ways down. Looked like the stopped a little too early on the lathe.

Questar sell a 1/2 x 28 and a 1/2 x 36. 28 meaning 28 turns per 1 inch and 36 like wise. The 1/2 in the diameter so the reason it only goes on half way is because you have the wrong amount of turns per inch and its starting to cross thread.
