I have been looking at the newer Ruger SR22 rifles and I am wondering can you do a conversion to 17 HMR ? also whare can you buy the parts or kits, also on the same idea whare can you buy the conversion for the 10/22 to make it 17 HMR. Cheers Andrew

i don't know if there are any kits but manufactures don't recommend any 17hmr ammo to be shot out of a semi.this is what i found:
Major ammunition manufacturers have issued safety notices concerning the use of .17 HMR ammunition in semi-auto firearms. According to the manufacturers, firing .17 HMR ammo in semi-auto firearms could result in property damage or serious personal injury and should be immediately discontinued. Press releases concerning the safety notices state: "17 HMR ammunition is manufactured in accordance with standards issued by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI). Subsequent to the design and introduction of 17 HMR ammunition in the market, 17 HMR semi-automatic firearms were introduced by various firearm manufacturers. Those firearms have proven to be incompatible with 17 HMR ammunition. 17 HMR ammunition is suitable for use in quality firearms in good condition that are not semi-automatic."

The receiver on a regular 10/22 is not strong enough to withstand the bolt blowing back and smashing against the rear of the receiver. A few guys on rimfirecentral tried it, but the aluminum receiver broke apart. There are a few 10/22 magnum on a 10/22 receiver, and there's a few 10/22 magnums converted to shoot .17hmr. Another conversion to look at is to .17hm2. Rimfirecentral is your best bet to learn of these conversions. Of course you could always buy a complete VQ or Magnum Research rifle in your desired calibre....

17 hmr is no good for simple blowback system. Bolt blows back before pressure has drooped to the safe level. If delay mechanism or locked breech was used it could work fine

i dident know that this was dangerous I will just be sticking with the .22Lr it came with the. But i will be upgrading the components. does anyone know who I can buy some upgrade parts from? i would like to get the trigger hammer and maybe A barrrel, I think the Volquartsen parts are the best so thats is what i will do with. Or do you guys think there is better parts to upgrade with? if so what are they and whare can i buy them. Cheers and thanks for the help this is my first rimfire build i have been playing with Milsurplus for a long time and am looking for somthing new to build.

Ruger made one until 06 then dicontinued them some relabilty issues.
and maybe safety issues?

Ruger never actually sold the 10/22 in .17hmr. They made one, it's even in the owners manuals for thatvyear, but it was never sold because of safety and reliability issues.
