So a gent at a pretty reputable dealer who will remain nameless advised me against buying the Ruger SR9 based on reliability and longevity issues. This is his opinion, everybody has one. As I have no personal experience with this gun I want to hear a consensus, rather than one single opinion. Can any SR9 owners chime in? The price was right on it...

Mine has about 1000 rounds through it and so far not any problems at all.

I say get it at the right price and shoot the crap out of it.

Regards

Great gun at a great price. Never heard of reliability or longevity issues with the SR9. I'd say that gent doesn't know what he is talking about or has something else he'd like to sell you. I've owned two and put several thousand rounds through them without a problem.

I know a few folks with them that are more than happy. Shot one myself and liked it. The trigger could use a little upgrading but other than that the groups made me look good and the gun fit my fairly large hands well. Seems to point in a nice natural manner similar to a 1911 as well.

The nice thing is that although Ruger does not give a written guarantee their company policy is to basically keep their guns working for the lifetime of the gun if at all practical. Only obvious abuse will negate this from what I've read.

Now if you plan on using it in some manner that will see something like 6000 rounds a year or more being sent down range then I could see where parts will likely wear in a few years. But I wouldn't call it any more or less reliable than many others.

Since you're in Vancouver drop by DVC and talk to some of the regular staff. They've got at least one SR9 for rental duty. Hell, give them some money and shoot it to double check if it's the one for you. Anyhow, if it turns out that this is the same SR9 that they've had for going on four years now then I'd say that the shop guy is full of beans. Those rental guns see more ammo in a month than the big majority of us shoot in a year. So if it has lasted for 4 years with only minor repairs and parts I'd say you're gold to go.

You could be right on that one, I noticed he had no Rugers in the store but was steering me to the sigs and barettas lol

Ney. Had one briefly it was ok but nothing worth keeping IMO. Get a Glock or M&P if you want a plastic 9mm.

First response from this side of the fence, good to hear all opinions. Funny Glock and M&P are the other contenders. Don't know why but I'm just on a plastic kick right now, have my fill of 1911s I guess

I bought mine about a year ago and have put maybe 1000 rounds through it. Was a great first handgun for me. Didn't like some of the reloads I had made up. I've stepped up to a CZ now. So it sees less action but I just can't seem to gather the will to sell it.

i picked one up and its a fine gun.
nice and small and light, feels great in the hand.
it dosnt get out as much as my M&P but it gets out a lot more then my Glock, haha!

for the price point on the SR9 you cant go wrong.
best bang for the buck.
whenever anyone asks me what to get for a first gun or for a $500 price range gun i say SR9.
and no one has ever came back to argue that recommendation.

infact.... my mom is looking at picking one up, she just saw the black on black ones and i wouldn't be surprised to see her pick one up.
a girl needs a retirement hobby im told.

Had mine for a few years now and no complaints. Have put about 500 rounds of various ammo without any problems. If it fits comfortable in your hand, I would say buy it! Like other people said, try to shoot a pistol first instead of just holding it in the store.

It sounds like the sales person was trying to up sell . Ruger is a very good firearms company and builds exceptional products at a very good price point . I own several Ruger handguns and have never had a problem with any of them.....they tend to be well designed and over engineered for reliability . Personally , I would find a different gun dealer because it sounds like that sales person was either very poorly informed or wanted to pick your pockets by up selling . Get the SR9 , you can not go wrong as Ruger has excellent customer service and produces a great firearm......Take care

I got one and can't say I'm a big fan of it. Trigger is pretty bad, no indication of when it is going to break. It's made out of the cheapest materials using the cheapest production methods....cast slide, stamped steel parts, molded plastic etc. Shoots mediocre compared to my Sig's or BHP or Girsan or 1911's.
For the $150 difference I find the glock to be miles ahead of the SR9.

I don't know what gent at what dealer you're referring to, but in the case of the SR9 I think he's out to lunch.

I have one of the OD green frame SR9's, and I have had exactly ZERO problems with it. It eats whatever ammo I feed it (including lead bullet reloads) with good accuracy. The trigger isn't the greatest out of the box, but shoot between 300-500 rnds out of it and the trigger smooths right up. You can buy a kit to improve the trigger, but I never bothered.

I have had exactly ONE jam with this fine handgun, and that was with my reloaded ammo (case was too long, forgot to trim that one and it snuck into my ammo supply. oh well sh!t happens :D). I love the ambi safety and mag release on it.

Oh BTW, mine has upwards of 3000 rnds through it, and no it is not and never will be for sale.
