Does anyone have any hands-on experience or trigger time behind any of the short cartridge SSD replicas? I've seen the BD 38 and was quite impressed, if SSD put the same amount of detail and craftsmanship into the assault rifles, these would appear to be a great way to blow a hefty tax refund. I'm particularly interested in the BD 42(H), Haenel's rare predecessor to the StG 44. Mean looking gun.

Mine is fun. I have the BD-44 (StG44 Replica), and in terms of craftsmanship and originality, it is spot on IMHO. I reload PRVI brass and Hornady 125's, and she shoots like a dream.

I have only had mishaps with "ammo" I bought from a certain Canadian vendor who shall remain nameless... (mishap: cases stuck in chamber as these $1/round bullets were reloaded 8mm kurz that had not been resized). To get the rounds out I had to open the bolt with my entrenching tool which was luckily covered in leather...)

All ammo sillyness aside, it is a dream to shoot, and has quite an interesting sound and feel to it when fired, due to the wooden stock and the badass recoil spring inside of it.

Just can't beat the coolness factor of it either... now all I need to get my grubby lil hands on is that BD-42... Imagine, hunting some Alberta Whitetail with a non restricted FG-42!
