SSG's?Buckshot....

If it were me and I had to use buckshot, I wouldn't pull the trigger unless the deer was under 20 yards. Buckshot is simply too hard to get good shot placement with.

A slug would be more to my liking if I absolutely had to take a deer with a shotgun.

depends a lot on the size of the animal, and how well the buckshot performs out of your gun. but id have to say that buckshot in general is best used at very close range, say 50ft or so.

is it safe? i dont know, its your gun. go to the range and find out!

There's no way to say for sure without patterning the gun. What is the choke? Modified choke usually gives the best patterns. As for safety, there should be no problem with buckshot in any shotgun that is safe to shoot.

Generally, buckshot has a very short effective range.

I have shot deer with buckshot in hunting areas where rifles or shotgun slugs are not permitted. It is for very close range work 20 to 25 yards. Aim for the head. A compound bow has a greater effective range.

Re" 00 Buck

Well , here's my opinion... I have taken three deer with a 12 ga shotgun and standard 9 pellet 00 Buckshot... It was shotgun only season in S. ON... Two deer at 30 to 35 yds , broadside through the ribs I got penetration to the offside , some pellets I found under the hide.. Some were a few inches in only when they hit something a little tougher. One kill was a dramatic in the trracks kill , the other went about 25 yds and dropped...

Be sure and pattern your gun and see what the targets look like , that will determine what range you can shoot at and be sure of a kill.

All the best hunting!

Bob

Buckshot can be deadly but only at close range.
Say 20 to 40 yards and shoot for the chest cavity.
That said a friend of mine dropped a cow moose at almost 90 yards with one shot with a 2 3/4 inch buckshot load.
Either way in my opinion a slug is a better bet.

:eek::eek::eek:

Did you witness this first hand Mike?

The reason I ask is that I have patterned buckshot at 50 yards with various chokes and they all performed miserably, much less had enough penetration to down a moose at near twice that distance.:confused::confused:

90 yards?

With buck? You sure not a slug??

I think somebody's nose is growing..........

Yeah, I'm with ya. I can put slugs where I want 'em...........but 90 yards?

And I sure wouldn't feel very good about even trying that shot on an animal.
Maybe if I was VERY hungery.

Didn't you know this is the internet. I can do the same 90 yard shot with buck, then I like to ride off on my winged unicorn into the sunset.

Oh ya.............I can do it while riding my unicorn.
It helps if you sit on his head if you know what I mean;)

Thanks guys!I think I'll save the OO for back porch bears(they're comming out of the woodwork now). The reason for this thread is I'm invited on a shotgun only deer hunt this fall in SW Ont.and I did'nt want to invest in a slug gun til I see if I'm going to like it or not.For now I'll stick with slugs & practice.

I know it sounds like a tall tale and maybe it was a freak occurance.
But I saw the moose skinned and there were three balls under the hide on the far side of the moose. I didn't witness the event but was shown the scene afterwards and from where the guy "said" he shot from to the gut
pile was 90 paces.
At any rate I wouldn't even shoot at a moose with buckshot at any range.
Just thought I'd throw that story out there,it never fails to wind people up.

Not sure if you guys subscribe to "The box of truth" news letter... but they have an interesting one this week where they shoot different buchshot at 10Y

Federal Tactical 00 Buck with Flight Control Wad  I want to try some of that stuff!

^^^^^^ Thats some serious damage.

I'd like to see 30 yards & 40 yards.

In the past buckshot was all we used with good success. Kept it reasonable and I'd estimate 95% were bang flops, never lost one.

You have to know the limitations of any round you are using.

I moved on to a slug barrell and scope with the ability to shot 150 yards. On some occasion's though I wished I had buckshot when that deer jumped up in front of me at 30 yards and only gave me one chance for a quick shot.
