St. Paul, AB CQB Clinic 19-20 Sep 2015 Debrief Here!

I am attending a wedding on the 19th otherwise I would be there for certain. I hope it goes well this year and it will become an annual course so I can get in there in 2016.

How many guns should we be bringing? I intend to bring my 10" AR and a pistol however when I read the equipment list I think I should be bringing a third non-restricted. Is this right? If so, is there an option that would be best for getting the most out of the weekend?

Iron sight?
different caliber?
etc?

Thanks

Jason

That NR option is for those who have NO restricted rifles at all. You do and you should use the restricted stuff. Just shoot the same platform the entire weekend and you will benefit the most by NOT switching platforms. It's that simple.

Getting closer and closer. In Virden, MB tonight and ready for the M14 clinic at Wolverine Sports!

One more sleep! :dancingbanana:

It's Friday morning here in beautiful Turner Valley (gotta love them foothills). I'm packing my truck for the journey up to St. Paul and the range. Will do a range recon / recce this afternoon.

It's sunny, we are in Alberta, we are above ground today; What's not to like? :)

Cheers,

Allrighty then....

I'm back from my range recce. Some points to know before setting out tomorrow.

* The property is on the East side of Sec Hwy 881... you will see TWO green signs (don't worry)
* Drive PAST the ranch house and keep going the double car garage / workshop/ gym/classroom complex.. PARK THERE
* Bathroom is available for use... it flushes , too! :)
* You will see my Tacoma Grey Dbl cab short bed there!
* Gather there for 0900 , nice and casual
* Bring some sandwiches for lunch and lots of drinks and snacks for the day.
* We will eat back at the gym/classroom/shop/garage complex
* Once we complete our admin and classroom session we will convoy another 500m or so to the range.
* Wear sturdy boots/footwear, the footpath to the shooting range is down a track to the ravine/range with a super backstop
* organize your gear so that you can pack it down the footpath (guessing 80 yards or so) We will discuss this technique/method/ritual

There you go... forecast calls for 20 degree celsius temperatures.. Likely shaded in that ravine/range

Have a great sleep , if you can. I know you AB dudes are excited and deprived of CQB fun!

Cheers,
Barney

That was a really great time. The private range in the wooded ravine is a beautiful place for a weekend of shooting. Apparently the really fun stuff is yet to come. Money well spent.

This was an amazing time. I learned a ton of stuff. I am a pretty casual shooter, and I was pushed way out of my comfort zone. The safety was top-notch the whole time. This was money well-spent, a weekend well-spent, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I'll be watching your thread, and would be thrilled to take more of your courses. I had never heard of CQB before, and it was awesome.

Thank you so much for bringing this amazing course to Alberta.

Thanks Barney, left the Rafter truly inspired. Am sitting here buzzing just reviewing it all. Your words and lessons will be with me forever man. Upped my game... hell, upped my life.

Just drove 600 kliks and I'm safely in my hosts' place in Turner Valley, AB. Most happy, most pleased and most regretful to leave a super bunch of guys from Northern AB. I am gonna miss you guys!

It was a most epic learning experience for me. :)

You guys were most open to learning new stuff... the growth mindset comes to my mind. Your humour and willingness to work with my demands took me by surprise and we could accelerate that learning curve. That first day's effort allowed us to get 1.5 to 2 hours of training out of the way for the second day's work: starting off the Advance and Fire, and Transitions drills. That was most welcome.

I'm most thankful for our host and his facility the Rafter Ranch. Without his invitation and openness to give me a chance to showcase my skills and experience we would not have build this community in the two days we were together! Most thanks!

I've got to crash for my 700 klik drive to Kelowna but I will have time to yak here on this thread when I cool my heels at the Howard Johnson Motel on Hwy 97 by the Hwy 33 turnoff!

Cheers and good night!

I'm up and I'm awake for the journey to Kelowna.

So what was your take away moment?

What was you AHA thought or mindspark? Tactical Tailor, Ebay, plates, restorative yoga, Norc M4, always tune a second rifle mid day, cheap ammo

What was you Holy Poop revelation?

Some mindless ramblings to clear my head:

* Grey Ghost plate carrier, USA made by veterans, deployable and under $150 DS Tactical
* Training plates: Team Wendy for under $150 DSTactical in New Westminster
* does one even need a PC and plates
* can you get by with a Condor PC or Voodoo airsoft PC for workout purposes?
* Side plates? Only if you are really into hostile locations, then you have no choice
* Tactical Tailor pouches, EBay for used ones, very tough, deployable, back from deployment and with dust
* HSGI pouches Tacos
* AFG by Magpul, good , bad or indifferent? Works for you ?
* Slings, BFG, Vickers, Bungee work for you? Magpul MS3, MS4, MS2 ? Do your research
* Boots... how did your boots work walking down the hill with your gear?
* carrying system? Back pack, day pack? 3 Day assault pack?
* Short barrel or 16" barrel? or SPR 18.5" barrel work for this game?
* Optics magnification?
* Which gloves worked for you ?
* Holster mounting height and location... right height for the draw? right angle and placement for strong hand draw?
* mag pouch location(s) ? What works for you in Condition RED ?
* try the stuff back on in the mirror and tweak your presentation/draw/mag reload

Okay, breakfast time... before hitting the road to Kelowna?

Keep debriefing!

I had a blast , modified prone is going to get used every range trip so I can get the accuracy , I think for cqb a shorty is the way to go - will have to do some more tuning to mine , as we discussed , you can bench shoot for years and never have anything malfunction ; get it dirty and so hot the oil is burning off and you'll occasionally find issues :/
Thanks again to both you Barney and rafter ranch for putting this together , I'll be back for sure when you're out this way :)

And one more thing , to the army guy with the sks; pm me your number , I have a coffee can of stripper clips for you :)
Nelson

Okay, sight picture sight picture sight picture. Thinking I might get some air soft to keep up the momentum. Will be hard to just go punch paper from the bench anymore. Had some gear malfunctions and some revelations about what it takes to be accurate. Was happy with the way the bungee single point performed. Managed to un__ck myself after a rifle malfunction and get back in the game. Thinking kydex holster of some flavor. More to process. Thanks again for the kind gesture Nelson. Thanks to everyone, great bunch of guys. Would do it again with this bunch any day. Hoping Calgary comes together Barney. HAPPY DAYS MOTHER_UCKERS! !!!!

* I felt like I levelled up my pistol shooting big time. My standing accuracy got better and accuracy with speed got MUCH better.
* The pistol mag pouch locations on my *ahem* value-priced vest were pure trash. Useless and they got in the way of more important stuff. I'll be happier and faster with my gaming rig belt setup.
* I thought of running a red dot rather than the 1-4 optic I brought, but it didn't slow me down that much.
* My remedial action drill from modified prone failed me on a failure to extract because I went for speed of action rather than observing the chamber to see what ####ed up. Though to be fair, nothing short of a cleaning rod was getting me out of that mess. I find I rip a rim off Tula ammo and get an FTE about every 500 rounds. The cost of cheap ammo?

Great course, great location, great group of guys, couldn't have asked for a better weekend.
Learned a lot of great things to practice every time I go shooting from now on, this was definitely money well spent and really helped me feel better about my gear and how it would work under stress when I get into 3-gun next summer.

Highly recommend course to anyone who's looking for a safe, educational and fun weekend of shooting.
