Guys just chasing any info on the Shooting Times calibre an cartridges, I had seen alot of talk on the 7STW an i looked up the name an its Shooting Times Westerner, an since ive noticed there is a 7STE Shooting Times Easterner and i think a 358 STA Shooting Times Alaskan....
Its a pretty cool thing i guess, for each area.... i guess it was only made up cos they could be etc.

But whats out there , in the Shooting Times cal/carts??

Thanks
WL

257,6.5,7 are all based on the 8 Rem Mag case necked down with no changes. 358 STA is the 8 Rem Mag case necked up and blown out a bit. 7 STE is a necked down and improved 30-30 if memory serves , designed for lever guns that need the rim. Incidentally, Jon Sundra also necked the big Rem case up to 375 for an improved 375 H&H. I've had versions of all of these except the STE over the years, always like them. - dan

Close but no cigar - it's a 307 Win necked down and then improved as u say - taper blown out with a modified 40 degree shoulder. Layne Simpson developed them and recounts,

My contribution to the lever-action wildcat story is the 7mm Shooting Times Easterner, which is based on the .307 Winchester case. Not long after Winchester introduced the .307 in 1982, it dawned of me that it begged to be necked on down to 7mm...

The REALLY bad thing is Simpson sacrificed a perfectly good 336ER to rebarrel for the first one - unforgivable :)

That sounds like the 7-30 Waters Improved?

Not even in the same league, the 7mmSTE is the same as the 7mm-08 Ackley Improved but with a rim (you actually use the 7mm-08 AI reamer) The Waters is based on the .30-30 case whereas the STE is on the .307 Win. case.

I stand corrected on the STE, as I mentioned I've never owned one. There were a few 7mm- 30-30 wildcats before Waters' version, I used a 7mm Int-R for silhouette for quite a while, which is a 30-30 case necked down to 7mm, neck shortened slightly, case shoulder improved and blown forward. Used to push a 140 gr bullet to 2400 fps from the Contender's 14" bbl. - dan

This is 30-30 and sized brass and formed and reloaded 7-30. When i had a 307 i went to see about a 7-307 and the smith laughed at me. Then a while later i read about the STE. Looked like a fun gun. I settled on the Waters.
