I have a 7mm-08 stag 10. 24 inch barrel 1:8 twist shooting 162 eldm at 2566 with an sd of 3 and es of 7. It holds a 1 inch waterline at 800 yards. Rifle length gas system superlative arms adj gas block jp scs h2 with the stiff spring.
This gun is stupid accurate. 7mm08 is a winner in the stag 10. You can seat the bullet into the case but not compress powder charges.
As For an ackley I thought long and hard about it. Came to realize after a few dummy rounds the shoulder hangs up on the feed ramps too bad so I just stuck with a standard 7mm08 instead of fighting it. Every thing I've read about feeding an Ackley in an ar platform says it has trouble feeding.
I wouldnt do it for the almost non existent gain you would get in such a short barrel. Here is an example from when I was playing on quick load. A 30 inch barrel with a max of h414 yielded 3050 fps with a 165 gr bullet and a 24 was 2650 with the same charge. 400 fps over 6 inches. Lop another 5.4 inches off and I bet you are down to the 2200 fps with a 165 gr bullet due to it puking powder out the end of the barrel. You could use a faster powder like varget but you wouldnt gain much in such a short barrel. And packing more in there to burn up out side of the barrel is a waste with the Ackley.
Granted I dont use mine as a hunting rifle as it weighs over 13 pounds and has a 8-32 scope on it.
Just my 2 cents worth after shooting over 400 rounds through it so far. It runs like a champ but I wouldn't neuter the 7mm08 by using an 18.6. Just because the gains of the longer barrel are fairly substantial. And going Ackley is going to cause feed issues and you wont gain a much velocity. At least no viable gain in performance when it's not burning all the powder in the barrel. I'm at a 92.8% burn in a 24" with varget and a 162 gr bullet a shorter barrel is going to be less and the extra powder added with the Ackley is going to be even less still.
A 30 degree Ackley with a 28 inch or longer barrel would be the most significant gain you would see. I'd be willing to bet it would be over 3000 fps with a 162 and no feed issue because of the 30 degree shoulder and not a 40.
