First off a gratuitous shot of all the parts and tools #geisseleallthings
Very first step is disassemble your bolt carrier group, a 1/8" flat blade held get the pin out.
Remove the pin, firing pin, cam pin, and then the bolt
Take your barrel, bolt and headspace gauges.
Insert your GO gauge into the chamber, push your bolt in and rotate. It should rotate, you will have to overcome the ejector.
Next is to insert the NO GO gauge into the chamber, push your bolt in and try to rotate. It shouldn't rotate. You are done headspacing. Now would be a good time to generously lube the bolt and assemble your bolt carrier group
Next step is to remove your upper from the lower, place your reaction rod in the vise and slide your upper over it. Slide your barrel into the upper and align the pin with the groove in the barrel threads.
You will have to spin on your barrel nut. There are a lot of proprietary barrel nuts out there, so a standard AR-10 wrench might not work.
I torqued mine to 45 ft lbs, you might have to torque and retorque quite a few times to get the holes lined up for the gas tube. Just take your time.
Install your muzzle brake if you have one.
Now place your lower into a vise block. Take your buffer retainer and thread your receiver extension into your lower, press down on the retainer when you get close to it.
Take your take down pin, detent and spring. Push the take down pin in, insert the detent and then spring. Now depending if you have a rifle or a carbine stock, you will slide the stock over the receiver extension and capture the spring.
Install your buffer and spring. Use a tool to push down on the retainer.
Place the upper on the lower and push in the pivot pin. Insert your BCG and charging handle. Make sure you have lubed everything. Do a function test.
Now you have assembled your first AR-10.
