Stag 10 handgaurd thread

No blk label. Looks not so prettay to me. Me likes the jp signature forend. No cheese grating like the other guy says. My hands are full of callouses so there may be much cheese grating happening lol

I had one on my old modern Hunter, worked very well, but the rough texturing on the tube made it scratch the heck out of everything around it, also made it hang onto the dirt pretty good. It was very functional though and felt great in the hand, but a little hazardous in a well stocked safe etc. Just my experience, others are sure to disagree.

Ya I seen it in a video that it appears very rough and gritty. I would not have it sitt No next to my pretty rifles that’s for sure. I also like the look of the MI forend and the slr forend!

I don't find the JP to be rough and gritty.......?
It's a nice texture and I can't possibly fathom how it could affect any other things in the safe. I have rifles equiped with rails and other accessories and they don't bump each other in the safe.
That's a wierd criticism LOL
It's got a real nice feel to it and I like the minimalist approach it provides.
I also have a Diamondhead VRS T 308 high for my wife's build. I like the grip feature and the shape. I can see that one causing dings and scratches in other firearms in the safe if i was being careless.... much like the big chunk of aluminium and rails that is troy mcs m14 chassis...... but I manage hehehe

I have a spare brand new JP handguard in the ee if anyone needs one

So I need a vise if I want to change out the handguard on my stag eh? I wouldn’t mind the jp handguard especially if I don’t like the stag forend. The stag one looks nice in photos anyway

Anyone know of a Canadian retailer (preferably a site sponsor) who can get the ODIN Works 12.5" .308 M-LOK Handguard shown below?

As well, any opinions on this handguard or Odin Works in general?

Thank you.

Speaking of which... why is the STOCK handguard for the GI Stag 10 so much longer than the gas block itself? From memory, it is about 2 inches longer. What's the philosophy behind that? Over-protect the barrel?

No point in exposing the gas block. Makes it more susceptible to damage. Plus the majority of people tend to prefer long handguards that cover most of the barrel. Unless of course your 75 years old. Lol

The most important thing to protect is the fragile gas tube. The barrel and gas block as well but to a much lesser extent.

I'm of two minds on this latest trend. In some cases I do like the look. But I also like the look of the gas block on the end of the handguard. As long as the gas tube is protected, I think it looks good and with a rifle length gas system there is enough real estate for me to have a bipod, vertical grip etc. The added space is just more weight up front. On some of my rifles the handguard goes past the gas block and on others it doesn't. With newer stronger and lighter handguard designs they have been able to transition to longer handguards. However I would recommend being careful when picking your handguard if going past the gas block as some of them flex a bit and can start pushing against the gas block which doesn't help accuracy and could cause problems eventually.

With a carbine or even Mid length gas tube, I like the handguard to go past or just cover the front end of the gas block. With rifle length, I don't mind the handguard going to the back of the gas block. Especially with 308 rifles where you're looking at loosing as much weight from the front as you can.

Fighting guns where the gas block is exposed include: LMT MWS, KAC SR 25 (Pre URX 4), AR10t (Canadian military version), AR10 SASS, Scar 17 etc etc. Again, I'm of two minds on this.

As I said, I'm of two minds on this... Here's a SR 25 with 20" barrel. With the URX 3.1 handguard they protect the end of the gas block by shielding it from above. A carbine or mid length would be covered. Yet the URX 4 goes past. In the case of the SR 15 as seen below it goes past the gas block which is a midlength gas tube. While initially I wasn't sure about the URX 4 as the 3.1 I found more KAC iconic, I have to say, that I really do like it. With the lighter SR 15 it's actually fairly awesome.

I have the ar-15 version of that forend on my SLR. I love it, it’s light, has that skeletonized look and feels great in the hand. If your worried about damaging your gas block though the 12.5” leaves the block exposed on a rifle length system. I am not worried about this at all, if I was able to hit the gas block hard enough to damage it, it would probably do just as much damage to the far more expensive handguard protecting it. Wow the more I see the exposed gas block look the more I like it. That Odin works forend is saweet looking. I can’t get over that jp signature handguard though. I think the gas block exposed even half ways is already much nicer looking than my 17” stag handguard where hardly any barrel is sticking past the forend. Grrrr.....lol

What's with the fde Buttstock and grip? New trend?

Old trend. I have a couple of rifles with FDE stock and grip. I actually like the looks of it. I have an ADCOR done up like that as well as an LMT mrp.

Just something a bit different.

Actually come to think of it, the UK L129A1 ( LMT MWS 308 ) has the FDE furniture. So there is military precedence as well.

I was thinking of putting together a 6.5 CM Stag 10 and in that case I was going to use a FDE B5 stock (I have already thanks to the non matching BCL 102 colours), and an ergo grip in FDE. Again, I like the look, it's a bit different. But it also helps quickly ID which gun you is which if you have multiples of the same gun, style etc.

I am after an 18" Midwest Industries for mine...looking like irunguns will have to order it for me? Or will Brownells order non-stocking items for people if they carry that brand/line already?

Listed under customer service, they say you contact them to special order items. So assuming they carry the brand they should be able to special order in what your looking for. Contact their customer service dept 1 800 741 0015

Did you grab your Odin Works handguard in Canada? I can’t find a dealer anywhere stocking them, or even an American one that will ship to Canada.
