Just working in finishing up my build and am wondering what handguards y'all are running?

I picked up a super-cheap one from **vendor** and regret it. The rail on the guard sits about a 1/2 centimeter lower than the rail on the receiver and it is driving me nuts.

I'm looking for a hand guard that isn't fancy (top rail + ability to least put a rail on the bottom), doesn't break the bank and is black.

Suggestions?

Agreed, this handguard was a letdown. Just installed one for a buddy - I guess for the price it cant be beat as a #### barrel nut and gas tube protector, but really... If its marked for use on a Stag, get the height right.

IMO the best ones available right now are the JL billet, MRA X1, and the Odin works O2 lite. None of these are cheap but you won't regret paying a little extra. You might be able to get a Midwest industries on sale from Brownells for a little cheaper, but with the exchange right now it's doubtful.

Handguards are by far the worst aspect of the large frame AR type rifles. 1) because even though there’s “specs” they still vary greatly, and 2) there just isn’t much out there in reality.

I put a Cross Machine & Tool rail on mine from RDSC and I’ve been decently happy with it.
Ideally I’d like to find a KAC URX rail or a Noveske N6 but they’re pretty much unicorn status at this time.

JP enterprise Signature MKIII handguard on one upper.... fit like it was meant too
Diamondhead VRS-T High dpms 15" handguard on the other upper and it also fit like it was meant too. When these rifles launched up here this handguard was featured on the rifle in the original add but doesn't seem they offer it anymore from stag. Can get it imported thru Elite Defense though.

both uppers are Stag-10.

Highly recommend the MRA X1. It even comes with the wrench for the barrel nut (attaches to a torque wrench).

The Magpul M-LOK 5 slot rail on the bottom was added by me for an Atlas bipod that is incoming. That's not included.

I usually dont break the bank on handguards for my ARs but for the stag10 I wanted to lighten the front end as much as possible so I went with a 13.5" v7 hyperlight handguard. This thing is crazy light and just the perfect length to cover the gas block. My gas port is 5/16" further forward than most barrels so for most people it would cover 90% of the gas block.

It looks like the profile on the side doesn't quite line up. Is there actually a mismatch or is it a lighting trick?

It doesn't match up on any rifle. Every hand guard is thicker than the upper receiver at that point because the hand guard has to be wide enough to slide over the barrel nut. Different manufacturers approach this in different ways... I like the simplicity of the MRA. If you don't, check the Stag-10 picture thread and you'll see a lot of other examples you may find more aesthetically pleasing:

The only negative with the MRA is I wish the finish was darker. In full daylight it appears a bit lighter than the rest of the gun, but that's me nitpicking. Fit, finish and weight are superb plus it's made in Canada.

Thanks for the explanation. It looks like Stag approached it the same way with the hand guard they use on the complete rifles.

I used an Aero Atlas M5 without the full rail for my build and I'm very happy with it. Nice and sleek and light and didn't break the bank. Under $240 from Saskatoon Gun Works and they have full rail versions if that's your thing.

I keep waiting for someone to bring out a hand guard for a DPMS high pattern AR-10 with a full length RRS dovetail at 6 o'clock like that new Geiselle one (only for AR-15s). MRA said they were working on one.

I was planning to do the same, do you have a pic to share?
