Hey CGN,

I am wanting to install a Magpul gen 2 UBR stock on my Stag 10...what tools and parts are needed? Do I need a vice mag block? And if so...where are you guys finding them in Canada?!

What size/length is the stock buffer this gun comes with and will it work okay with the UBR gen 2?

Sorry for all the questions...new to the AR platform, at least when it comes to changing parts out and I'd rather order all the parts I need correctly the first time!

Thanks,

- Black

From what I remember, the UBR2 comes with its own extension tube. The Stag10 comes with a mil-spec carbine tube. If you don't care for the cosmetics of the castle nut securing the extension tube, you can use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to knock it from the staking and then unscrew it, slowly, with your finger (or shop towel) on the buffer retaining pin to prevent it from rocketing off and across your room. If you want to salvage it with minimal damage, get a castle nut wrench. Any of the AR multi-wrenches should work.

For a vise block, a Pmag works well in a pinch. Just protect it with a shop towel and don't go crazy tightening down the vise.

Parts:
- ubr stock and ubr receiver tube

Tools:
- AR wrench if you have it... if not, as mentioned, a hammer and screwdriver works fine.

Procedure:
- remove old stock
- remove buffer and spring
- loosen the old buffer castle nut (Ar wrench or hammer/screwdriver needed at this point)
... vice not necessary, but can be an aid
- depress the buffer tube pin/spring, while unscrewing the buffer tube
* maintain tension on the buffer pin /spring until the tube has cleared it fully, and slowly release the tension to prevent the spring and pin from going flying

Screw new buffer tube in place
Put pin and spring back in while doing the step above, noting maintining tension on it until it’s covered.
Install new stock

Both the stag and your ubr are considered carbine buffer tubes and utilize the same buffer/spring

*also note, under the old end plate of the original buffer, another spring and pin exists (to block the rear pin). As you unscrew the old buffer tube (with the space created by backing off the castle nut), you’ll need to pull the back plate along the grove on the buffer tube. This will drop the tension on that spring/pin, and as you unwind it, take the spring out and put it aside to reinstall with the new buffer tube/receiver extension

Brownell's has an excellent video. The advise above is quite good. Only points I would add are the spring on the buffer tube...keep a small screw driver on that bad boy when you retract your spring & remove your buffer tube. Tightening you castle nut requires a bit of effort to keep your safety selector spring in check and straight so you don't bend it up. Also use lock tight on the buffer tube screw with a wide blade, thick screw driver....you don't need a ton of torque on that screw....the lock tight will keep it in place.
