...are they the same specs? Are the Stag’s heavy barrels like the C8 SFW? They have a bulge in the front similar to the SFW. Anyone know?

Nice try that a M4 - not a SFW - note the Colt not Diemaco M203 (Colt has a proper mount and does not sit 4 million miles too low)

I dont have a good shot of one on a SFW - but you can see the drop off the Diemaco M203A1 on this C7A2

PS the SFW above was not me - I used an EOTECH ;) -- plus Dave dropped the PEQ for a PAC and added a Bipod

Thanks all. Many thanks to KevinB a picture tells a thousand words.

I guess in a nutshell I’m asking. Are there any M4/M16/AR type rifles used by ANY military that have a 16 in barrel instead of a 14.5 in barrel (other then Diemaco's C8 SFW)?

I understand the resent needs and specs of the heavy barreled C8 SFW 16in barrel but was the original reason for a 16in barrel only to meet OAL requirements for civie’s (and some police) in the US?

What length is the barrel of a M4A1 HB is it still 14.5?

Thanks for your help in advance.:)

The C8SFW/L119A1 is the only issue general issue 5.56mm carbine with a 16" barrel and a carbine gas system.

The USN Recce rifles have a 16" lilja barrel and a carbine gas system but are covered with a KAC rifle lenght free float tube.

The 5th Group 6.8 carbines are midlength 16" guns.

ALL the M4 and M4A1 barrels are 14.5"

IMHO Diemaco and other GOOFED with the SFW/FTHB and should have gone to a midlength.

Thanks KevinB, That’s what I thought.

I have always thought the 1.5" more in a 16" barrel was pointless. Many argue it does matter but I don't know enough about rifle twist and bullet stabilization to argue either way.

This post was because I was arguing with a friend that the C8 SFW was the only 16" military issue ar type rifle, he thought 16" was common in the US military (sounds like we were both wrong to a degree:redface: ). I don't really care either way, HE is the one who wants to get/build an M4 clone which is 14.5 not 16"(I’m going to make him read this;):) ). He thinks 16" is standard and thought maybe the Stags were a clone of a C8 SFW. Sounds like they are not.

Does Stag sell 14.5" ar's? Does anyone sell 14.5 or 16" heavy barrels in Canada?

A lot of people doe 14.5 or 16" heavy barrels.
Armalite for one does both.

SFW with can.

IMHO - if you want 16" go midlength gas setup (Armalite or custom) -- if you want 14.5 do the carbine gas system.

Stags barrels have nothing to do with anything from Diemaco/Colt Canada, including the SFW. Normal M4 profile (+1.6").

16.1" is the min length for sporting purposes in the US (anything shorter needs a $200 tax stamp).

16" used on the military rifles named above (and lot's of PD's) as they have a bit more velocity (the bullet needs velocity to splinter, the 16 extends the window of that happening, a bit... but are more convenient to carry than a 20").

M4's are 14.5"

All Ar-15 manufacturers make 14.5" barrels (incl SA), but the US DOS isn't issuing export permits for <16" barrels anymore. LEOs can still get approval, but LEOs are generally ordering either 16" or 10.5" these days.

The RO921HB in Kevs pic is an improved M4 profile. Colt fattened up the portion ahead of the chamber (under the handguards) to strengthen it for sustained full auto.

Maybe try Wolverine Supplies for a 14.5 Armalite, don't know if he still has them, but he might?

Funny thing is that Diemaco refers uncorrectly to the SFW barrel as being "mid-length"
w ww.diemaco.com/sfw-page.htm

I guess they mean that the length is in the middle between 14.5 and 20"

They're correct. It's a mid-length barrel (with a carbine length gas tube). ;)

There is a lot of incorrect stuff Diemaco does ;)
Unfortunately its usually based upon forces from outside sources that are a lot stupider than the source thinks...
