Stag10 lighter weight BCG question

So I’ve had my stag10 in 308 for a bit now. It has about 650 rounds through it (500++Federal xm80 and some random Norinco for S hits = all reliably cycled).

Upgrades over stock =

1. Faxon 18.6” big gunner 4150qpq button rifled & 2.24 pounds (stock barrel = 3.3 lbs)
2. Radiant weapons Ambi Raptor
3. V7 weapon systems magnesium hyper light hand guard 16.5” (7.3oz. Stock was 17 oz +-)
4. VG6 precision gamma (2.24 oz)

I like how much lighter it feels, not sure of the exact weight now (food scale only goes up to 6lbs Ha!)

All that being said, I want to ask about BCG’s...specifically lighter weight bcg’s. Stock BCG = 1lb 2.8 oz
I want something lighter (V7 or JP lmos)...but since I’m a total noobie...

1. will simply tossing in a lighter bcg, potentially F up reliability? Cycling issues etc. I briefly read, and watched videos (specifically the JP discussion on bcg mass etc)
2.Will I absolutely have to install an adjustable gas block?
3. Will I have to add in the Silent Captured Spring?

I just want it to cycle fed bulk reliably like it has been. Yah...sure I want to save weight, but if it messes things up that much I just won’t bother

Thanks in advance guys!

Wow, didn’t realize how heavy some of the stock components were.
I like your build. I just ordered a superlative arms gas block for mine. Think with the low mass bcg you’d be best with an adjustable block. Don’t need a scs, might be fine with stock buffer but you could get an adjustable buffer (tungsten weights). This would be considerably cheaper.

Thanks fellas! I’d love to just drop something in and not bother with the adjustable...but if I have to go that route I will.

Tharkhold : has reliability been effected with the Brownells? Stock gas block?

6 pounds? You have to share those specs man...

As far as the Brownells BCG goes, I thought of that too...but just recently read somewhere (stag10 sticky up above one of the last pages) that you cant get them shipped to Canada due to the price and needing an export license etc

So it looks like from everyone’s experience that going with the V7 or the Brownells titanium bcg, that I’ll have to also get an adjustable gas block...frig..very well. Thanks for the input guys haha

I have found lighter weight introduces reliability issues, especially as you change ammo. Any practical reason other than wanting to shed weight? What kind of optic are you running? If you are going for a LMOS also look at the SCS buffer with the ability to tune the weight of that.

I had no idea the OEM barrel was that heavy.

Adjustable gas block for sure. Maybe order some different weight buffers to play with. I am probably going to swap out my barrel now thanks haha.

With an adjustable gas block I wouldn't worry about different buffers, just use the lightest standard buffer and tune the gas. Unless you want to keep a heavier buffer for heavier loads.
As mentioned, if you have loads that vary wildly you may want to set the gas for the lightest cartridge for reliability. Heavier loads may be over gassed but you can adjust for that too and log the difference in gas settings if you switch back and forth

No, but i have an SLR Titanium adjustable gas bloc... so I had to adjust it, of course.

And yes you can, that's what I did... you just have to fill out a form, no biggie.

Order right from V7.

Good call.
Thanks for everyone’s input! It’s appreciated!

Think I’m going to look for an adjustable GB, a detent style, not the set screw allen style. I think the big gunner barrel is .750(?). And I’ll save up for a V7 or Brownells lightweight BCG

Maybe go through RDSC and have them install it.

Again, thanks guys! I have no choice if I want to go this route it seems

Yes big gunner has .750 gas journal.
You may not need the adjustable gas block. Another way to compensate a lighter bcg is with the recoil spring strenght. The scs kit is available with 3 springs. May not be necessary either.
Another weight saving can be had in the optic department.
