I'm torn up about which firearm I should get! Should it be a Ristricted M5R from Stag Arms or a non-ristricted Heckler and Koch SL8-5? What would you pick? Maybe I won't be able to get an AR or the H&K after October 14 if the NDP or Liberals have there way, or maybe the will just issue a prhibited licences to anyone who currently own any military firearms that the wnat to prohibit. But which would you buy? and Why?
:sniper:

they are both nice rifle`s, i have an ar15 which is my favorite rifle but i only punch holes in paper so the fact that it is restricted is not an issue for me. figure out what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend then make your decision , either one is good.

Id get the AR-15.You gotta figure that sometime in the future, parts could be an issue, so your gonna want something thats a little more common, you may have a better chance of getting the parts you need!

The 5R is 6.8SPC. If you're looking to do a lot of shooting, the 223 models are a lot cheaper to feed. Just a thought.

What type of rifle do I think you should choose? (I may have some bias). :D

A bit of an Apples and Oranges comparison. The HK is the better target rifle and is non-restricted. However, it is expensive and accessories are limited and very expensive.

The AR is a better "tactical" rifle. Less expensive, huge range or readily available and reasonably priced accessories.

I have both and tend towards the AR

As already stated, two different types of rifles. The HK without a lot of mods is cumbersome. It is more precise though than a standard AR. It's an HK if that means anything to you, and it's non restricted. It's more of a varmint/target shooter out of the box without the mods. With mods $$$.

The AR-15 is lighter, quicker with lots of add ons and is cheaper. It's a decent rig. The only issue is the restricted status.

Now... Precision AR-15s blurr the line. We're still waiting for the Stag Model 6 which would be a fairly affordable target shooting AR-15. The only issue again is the restricted status. If it wasn't restricted, this would clearly be the rifle to get. .5 moa guarantee with match trigger. I'm still interested in one though for range shooting.

So ask yourself what type of shooting you plan on doing? Also what do you plan on doing with the rifle?

If you want to shoot varmints and are looking for a non restricted accurate rifle then the HK is a consideration. But if you're planning on changing anything on the HK, such as the stock or add the built in bipod, then a Swiss Arms Target is another consideration.

You've got lots of research to do, and some sole searching to figure out what you want to use the rifle for. ;)

Good luck and let us know what you chose and why.

get the HK , good out of box accuracy, reliable, and a nice change to all these AR's everywhere .. also being non-restricted you can hunt iwth it there am i right ?
cant you guys get the swiss arms sig552's non-restricted ? id have one of those in a flash if they were available here in NZ

Restricted pretty much kills any rifle purchase for me. I much prefer to find some out of the way gravel pit outside the city to shoot by myself then at a crowded range so the AR isn't worth the trouble for me.

Thanks guys, I'm not sure besides shooting at the club, I'm not sure I'd drag an H&K to go hunting, although it would be intresting. I would be thinkg about .223, what would be the diffrence in acuracy with the diffrent ammo?

Why wouldn't people "drag" a gun to go hunting... I don't understand this statement I see all the time. Can't it be carried nicely? If any gun can take a beating, the HK should be able to...

Have you considered a Swiss arms black or green, more compact with the folding stock than the SL-8 & it's non restrictred as well , yes they are more expensive than the SL-8, but you have not mentioned price range. I love mine & frankly they have more ### appeal so to speak than & SL-8, just in my opinion. But if your hell bent on a SL-8 PM me ,I got a buddy who might sell his because it's a safe Queen.

Based on my previous post I baught a H&K. You can buy it shoot it and sell it for close to what you paid for it. IDK if thats possible with an AR but the HK price tag isn't so bad when you consider it doesn't depreciate.

I bought a new SL8-5 new the other day for $1900.00. Seems to like Federal match so far. Brass in .223 is getting hard to find though.

Where did you buy it?

As for price, it wasn't an option, I just want something that I'm going to enjoy shooting, I don't know how better the accuracy is on the SL8, and I know everyone who has an AR, love them. I just like the look of the SL8 but the AR is pretty cool too. The high resale values on the H&K are great, you can use it and trade it in at a later date and hardly lose anything. You think the Liberals would prohibit the SL8?
