Hey all I'm refinishing a walnut stock for the wife. She wants it stained with darker walnut stain. Can I just stain it then add tung oil as usual or are there steps to prep the stained wood

The catch is that after you stain it you must be careful with any sanding. If you cut through the finish and cut the stain it will show. I hate to stain wood. I just did a Browning double in a hi gloss epoxy finish that had ugly wood once stripped and had to fill the grain carefully to avoid sanding through the stain that I needed to apply.

You can add stain/colour to the tung oil. Not to pure tung oil, but to a modified tung oil (modified with solvents, just like "boiled" linseed oil vs raw linseed oil). But of course, test it on scrap first, some things might not be compatible.

Before he stains/tung oils, should he use a wood treatment to ensure equal absorption everywhere? I'm about to do the same thing and I noticed sometimes the oil would appear to sink in a little better in some places than others. Especially in old wood.

Sorry OP.

Just to clarify the above, a pre stain conditioner seals the wood (partially) and prevents the stain from being absorbed in more porous areas. It doesn't increase the porosity of less porous areas.

So the finish won't be as deep after the wood has been "conditioned".
