Stain for antlers?

Hey there everyone. Question for everyone doing their own euro mounts. I've got two moose racks I've been lugging around that I finally have the chance to put up. I'm just wondering if any uses a stain of any sort so as to preserve the current condition of them and not have them become so porous. Thanks,

I used clear thompson's water seal in mine at my camp.... But thy are outside.... For interior stuff varathane would do I bet... FYI, I left mine outside and they were faded to begin with....

wen I was a kid working in a taxidermy shop we would stain them with iodine just brush it on

It is quite commonly used in knife making to darken faded handle material. On heavy textured antlers a trick is to stain them dark, then lightly brush fine sandpaper over areas to lighten the high spots while Leaving the dark in the crevices. Or you can use it for purifying water for baby chicks.

Potassium permanganate works very well. I used it to stain the rack of a caribou that I shot in velvet.
There's lot so videos on Youtube showing how to use it.

I have used on antlers that are a bit faded to restore the Color stuff called. Brewax . Rub it on and rub off looks like they were when the animal was alive color

Min-Wax Dark Walnut wipe it on and wipe it off

I use instant coffee. Mix with a little water. wipe on,wipe off. Repeat untill you get the color wanted.

I have potassium permang but I just use a nice stain now. Does anyone know if there is some kind of coating to put on the rack after to keep rodents from chewing on them?
